Record and autoloop: How do I do that?

Post by Pluffo » Sun Jul 16, 2006 9:17 am

This is driving me nuts, and I´ve tried to extract information about this from the manual for a long time, without any result. What I want to do is what is described in this showcasemovie ( and I know this function isn´t exclusivce for Live 6 ) ---> http://www.ableton.com/pages/live_6/sho ... ative_flow

Kid Beyond seems to use it to.

Well, what I want to do is to set a certain barlenght, start recording in session view, and then I want Live to start autolooping my loop when I reach the wanted lenght. Is it posible to do this? I sure get the impression of that when I look at the video. Also I would like the next free clip slot to be armed and record straight after the clip before is finnished. This would be a great way to do several takes without having to mess around with the program in between.

Well, hopefully somebody understood what I´m searching for. Please help a lost user 8) Also, I would very much like to know where this feature is mentioned in the manual. I´ve read it from cover to cover without bumping in to the answer to my question.

I now how I can get a similar result. If I for example set the global quantisation to 2 bars I can press the play-button in the clip right after I´ve started recording. However, this is hard to do when I hold my guitar with both hands or when I´m standing over by my mic.

Once again...This is what I want to accomplish: I want to hit the recordbutton on a clip, let it count in, record a certain lenght, and then I want Live to start looping the clip instantly. One problem I experience now is that I have to cut down the loop every single time since I have to hit the stop-button AFTER I´ve recorded. That means I get some unwanted silence at the end of my loop.

Another problem is that the creative process just isn´t as fluid as it could be if I didn´t have to start and stop the music all the time.

For starters...Is this even posible or have I´ve been tricked by Ableton all the time?

so the key is to get a foot controller. my understanding of kid beyond's setup is that it's a bit more complex, with functions mapped to keyboard keys, which are linked to the foot controller via bome midi translator.

for moving directly to the next slot, try 'select next scene on launch' - not sure if that will do it, but check it out in preferences

Well, a footcontroler would kinda solve my problem but not quite. Look at the video. It mentions nothing about any external footcontroler and you can clearly see the guy has his hands on the guitar when the clip starts to loop. And why do they emphasise that the global quantisation is set to 2 bars? If you have a footcontroler you could set the global quantisation quite low.

Thanks for the tip about next scene on launch. However, I can already do several takes if I use the mouse or keyboard while I record. However, I want to be able to push one button and then just let Live take care of the rest.

ok i haven't watched the video you're talking about. the kid beyond one does show his foot controller.

the easiest way i think is going to be a second click on the clip button. so probably with a foot controller

Yeah..I guess that would be a way out.

Here´s the video, once again ----> http://www.ableton.com/pages/live_6/sho ... ative_flow

However, I can´t see any indication of that he triggers the clip again. The play-symbol remains red throughout the recording.

that video is a sales tool - i would not recommend watching it as a way to learn how to use the program

watch the other kid beyond one, in the artist section - it shows in more detail how he's got it set up

Yeah, Kid Beyond uses Bome's MIDI translator...

http://www.bome.com/midi/translator/examples.html

... which can trigger any number of events, including keystrokes, from one MIDI event. So he's able to start / kill a recording loop, trigger it, and move on to arm another track from two foot pedal actions. I think. Possibly.

Anyway, it'd take some setting up, and I'm guessing there was quite a lot of 'how the f*ck do I get this working' going on when he first tried it.

I haven't got round to trying the bome thing yet coz it looks like live 6 will let you trigger any number of events n actions from a single keystroke / MIDI event.

Which will be wonderful. Simple things I can't do now, like solo a number of tracks together / mute all the other tracks, because actually soloing cuts out all the send as well. (Which you don't want when your lead sound demands to be awash with delay, and suddenly turns into an irritating beep!)
