Sampler vs Dimension Pro

Post by jamester » Mon Jul 17, 2006 12:36 am

So, this new Sampler sounds a lot to me like Cakewalk's Dimension Pro (which I own). Basically a sort of synth/sampler hybrid, where you can use it for conventional instrument samples, or to take those samples and stack/mangle them with synthesis and fx.

Given that I already have Dim Pro, Sampler doesn't seem to be of interest to me...but I am curious if any of the testers are familiar enough with Dim Pro to give a little compare/contrast?

BTW: Just wanted to say that I'm jazzed about Live 6, and this seems like a particularly delicious time to enter the Ableton family (still on the demo).

cheers! :D

Personally I think the two will work well together.
You cant do Amplitude Modulation or Frequency Modulation of samples in DimPro , nor can you do active filter morphing or intensive granular style realtime start/end loop point modulation tricks.
I'll be using DimPro as my go to sample and synthesis Rompler tool and Sampler as a more traditional sample mangling and sound design tool for wavetable style effects , oddball sound design and built from the ground up creative sampling environments.
Definately room for both IMHO.
This means I will have to rely on Reaktor and KarmaFx modular far less for alot of duties and also means I will have less instruments to focus on mastering in general.
As I've stated elsewhere Operator + Sampler + Simpler + Impulse + Reason 3 + Dimension Pro and the new midi rack tools and controller options in Live 6 look like they'll be more than enough for my sonic needs and then some.
Which would be great for me as I'd happily piss off all my other freeware effects also and get back to a nicely stripped back and leaner working environment in general.
I also know Reason 3 and DimPro are mega stable in daily use and if I can just stick to the supplied tools in Live it would be a pretty slick set-up IMHO.

I just can't seem to bring myself to purchasing Operator or Sampler. I currently use the following sofware:

Sampletank 2 XL
SonikSynth 2
Dimension Pro
Rapture
Z3TA+
Battery 2

Buying any other software would just be overlap. They do seem to be promising, but I don't need them. I just want Live.

By the way, if you own Dimension Pro, you should head over to the website. Cakewalk just released a free expansion pack for Rapture and Dimension Pro.

I have a feeling that sampler will be insane and much better than any of us know currently
i own kontakt 2
which is amazingly powerful and complex and very unstable on osx with live and a Gigantic cpu hog

i think sampler will be like the rest of live which is simple but powerful
easy to learn and open ended in regards to creative uses

i don't even use kontakt anymore because its a pain in the neck most of the time

Hmm interesting... I was hoping Dim Pro would kind of be my "one-stop" solution to all of these uses. And it may very well be, as I'm not much of a "synth guy" to begin with. I will definitely keep on investigating Sampler as news develops, though if anything I may be better served with a proper synth like Operator as a compliment to Dim Pro...

Here here, brother! I think a lot of people are feeling that way these days, as our choices keep growing...there can be too much of a good thing!

Hey kb, what's up my man? I haven't been around the P5 forum much lately, partly because I feel like a traitor! ;-) But I can't help it, Live has won me over. lol But yeah, I got the expansion pack last nite, getting ready to check it out shortly!

In my recent daw overhaul I actually retired both ST 2 and S.Synth2. Again, I'm hoping Dim Pro will (eventually) have me covered (hoping more libraries become available). I think I'm going to have to decide between either Zeta/Rapture/Operator for a "go to" synth option. I realize they're all different, I gotta do some investigating...

Oh btw, great username! Always gives me a chuckle when I see it...and I approve! ;-)

I thought that was you man. What's up? I guess if you checked my signature, then you already realize that I have joined the dark side. I just got the full version over the weekend after they announced 6 and the free upgrade. I have been reading Ableton Live 5 power and trying to get comfortable with Live for a few weeks now. Don't feel like a trader man, I don't. I still go to the P5 forum, but I haven't told anyone I use Live now. I never really looked into Live until about 6 months ago, and when I did, I realized that Cakewalk's whole approach to P5V2 had to be taken from Live. I actually posted a thread about it over there at the P5 forum and got blasted for saying that.

http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=6820 ... ve&#682005

You are still a P5 owner and user even if you don't use P5 anymore. I have started a lot of threads over there about Live, so I could use some back up. Granpa Mojo said he uses Live and he was excited about the update. I have all of my vst's loaded in Live now. I have a Remote 37 SL and just downloaded and installed the Automap updates for Live. I also have a Trigger Finger, so I am really happy with my setup.

Don't hesistate. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Now I don't feel like the only P5 refugee.

What a coincidence I was just on the P5 forum a minute ago and I thought to myself, hey I haven't seen jamester post in a while! I always love seeing your avatar, it makes me want to go to a patio and order a glass of sangria. And hello kb as well, I don't post much on the forum, but I always check in to see what's happening. I've also started using live a lot more than P5 lately, but for it me it's mostly because my musical partner uses live and it's easier to move livesets between computers.

I'm also interested in trying out the sampler, just from reading the description my guess would also be that dimension pro wouldn't be substitute for sampler but a compliment.

Man, do you think we are safe here? What if someone from Cake sees us all congregating here? :D :) :) :o :o

What's up Kegerator? We had a little talk about Live on the P5 forums. What do you think about the update?

Well, at least Cake gave us some great new sounds for Rapture and Dimension Pro.

Kegerator - what's up d00d? Another username I approve of! ;-)

I feel better knowing I'm not alone here. lol I'm sure Cake will come out with a cool update for P5 later this Fall, but I've made up my mind (and plunked my money down).
I'm also interested in trying out the sampler, just from reading the description my guess would also be that dimension pro wouldn't be substitute for sampler but a compliment.
Yeah, and I guess that goes for a 'real' synth as well... I really like the acoustic samples in DP though; definitely dig the upright basses (and even the pianos) compared to S.Tank 2. But maybe that's just me...

...hey, was "Word" your name on the P5 forum? just curious...

Another P5 refugee.
Went Live 3 to P5 .
Then upgraded to L4 and L5 and P5VII doesn't admitedly get alot of use here though I prefer it for beat programming to to Live.
Dimension Pro gets tonnes of use in Live however.
Way more than I ever imagined.
That said I don't have P5 installed anymore and stick with Live and DimPro but sadly cannot resell the license for it due to Cakewalk licensing rules.
Pity really but I do prefer Live's overall workflow in general and am far more productive with it.

yeah I really lilke some of the accoustic samples in DP as well (yeah that upright bass is pretty good and whenever I need a piano I use the DP ones) especially because they are relatively compact in size, I mean I like the ivory piano but I don't want to put 40GB on my laptop! I'm curious to here the quality of some of the instruments on the sampler.

And nope I'm actually missword on the P5 forum, I just changed it here on a whim when I signed up.

LOL, didn't someone just post on the P5 board saying that people weren't posting as much and had probably moved on to other apps - mainly because Cake has been so quiet about p5v3.

You know, I'm really starting to wonder how many people have switched. I actually don't want P5 to die out, well at least not the softsynth development.
