Freezing when recording from external midi source

I've been having this problem for a while and it is starting to get really annoying. Whenever I am recording midi data into midi tracks, and it is a complicated passage with lots of notes and midi controller data, Live will just freeze up. It doesn't crash, it just won't recognize any keybord or mouse commands and just continues recording for a few minutes until it has sorted itself out. It seems like Live can't handle all the info and gets choked up, taking a few minutes of no midi input to sort itself out. As you can imagine this is pretty infuriating having to wait every time when all you want to do is the second take!

Anyone have the same problem? Anyone got any suggestions?

I am using Live version 5.0.3 on a Mac running OSX 10.4. Ram 512. My midi inout is a USB MIDI SPORT 2x2.
