Live IS a slicer

Post by AdamJay » Mon Jul 17, 2006 11:27 pm

try called Sample Offset, an automation envelope parameter under Envelopes - Clip in Clip View.

many Live users have been using it since it was introduced in Live 3. it works well.

you should try it some time.

that helps you rearrange the loop yeah, but that has nothing to do with slicing
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

volume/pan/fx envelopes + sample offset + grid = SLICE

if its the individual hits you want after the fact... arrange.

if you *need* a slicer to achieve what you want to do, you're in the wrong game.

inspite of the snooty sarcasm. your points here are true and note worthy Adam. i don' think this is what those who are desiring a slicer have in mind. the Sample Offset capabilities and ability to work with individual hits via Arrange works fine...i have been using these features for a long while. i think folks (including myself) are wanting dedicated solely for optimal slicing. i can't speak for the whole lot of folks wanting a built-in slicer and/or their definition of what that means to them, and you are right to point out 'Sample Offset' as many folks may not know about or have possibly overlooked this great clip feature but its not ideal imo. it works, and for you it more be the 'beez kneez' but for the kind of music i make and many others this just isn't cuttin it (pardon the pun)...so we look to other software (vst's and au's) to do a task that we'd love see Live do.

your post comes off as being really pompous and suggest that if one were to know about this ellustrious pearl of Live wisdom called 'Sample Offset' we'd just see that "hey, its there already...weeee", which for some folks this may be enlightening and would hopefully satisfy their needs.

but many of us this Sample Offset is not ideal, it is not a Slicer and is not what we're asking. ...and we're entitled to that opinion and to asking/desiring that feature.

peace

who said anything about needing a slicer.....did I?...no......but you know that this isn't a slicer....and all you biased beta testers.....dont try to prove your case against the live 6 upgrade...that's for us to decide...i dont disagree nor agree with your usages of the new features and the limitations......just dont post threads about things that aren't what they are...end of story

I've found the slicer has too limited a range myself - half a bar is nowhere near enough.

Normally any sample with enough beats to chop up is 4 bars or at least 2 bars long, the sample offset only offsets +/-8 beats. I need +/- 64 beats ... quite a jump.
It's alright for minor stuff, quick effects, but I still prefer to chop beats by hand in arrange as I don't ever get a feeling of precise control out of the offset envelope.

Agreed. Maybe I don't have the technique down, but this is not my idea of beat slicing.

p.s. What the hell are you doing up at this hour! 8O
