LIVE 7: please include 5.1 surround :)

Post by dr_dohh » Tue Jul 18, 2006 7:16 am

this is my main sequencer now, and now that you have video support for live 6, I hope you get to include surround in the next version of Live.

this is probably the best interface in the market today, can't wait for the 6th edition!

Screw 7! Surround NOW!!!! I'm really hoping some of the new stuff allows for atleast a crappy surround hack job... *sigh* My surround monitoring begs to be used with Live.....

live 6 wont have 5.1 surround?
it seems like this is something we would not have to bother mentioning.
what apps now days dont have 5.1?
maybe this is some big secret they are holding from us so when the release date comes we all will be upgrading?
like said above its odd not to have 5.1 with video
Very Odd!!!!!!!
and with the new sampler, who would want to swing a massive sample they built up 360 degrees around the room?

As with video support, 5.1 is something it would be fantastic to at least get a
version 1.0 of implementation... anyone from ableton care to comment on its
position in the development prioity queue?

i think most people would be very happy if we simply had a quad or LCRsLsR
panner & the ability to output to a 5.1 monitoring/record to a 5.1 stem
We are easily capable of generating the LFE channel ourselves using sends
& a filter...

We could definitely wait for support to play back a 5.1 clip

I think at this stage its more about generating 5.1 material
& the existing routing almost makes this possible - i can
happily work in quad all except for the panning....

How can it not have 5.1????? Is there going to be a workaround for this? maybe rewiring to another aplication or something? Because i have the lite version and I was finally going for a boxed version of Live 6 but if there is no way to do 5.1 I guess Ill pretty much have to look somewhere else

I'm not an expert on panning laws. But I'm sure that you could "fake" surround in Live 6.
With fake i mean: you don't get the little circle with the dot you can move around.
It will probably be an audio effect rack.
The cool thing is, you can have different effects for different "areas".

Please don't go too much towards video production, live supports us in creating audio, not video, i can imagine it's great to have vid support and all but it's also eating up our memory a LOT, just use adobe premiere or flash or something, i think it's great to have syncronised vid support agains audio but it;s just that ableton live is an audio sequencer and should stay just there..., dont get me wrongi love live, realy but video's i make with other programs which are far more mature in that and again, it's eating memory like hell.... just a note from the galo ;)

Please don't go too much towards video production
thats not what this thread is asking for
5.1 is about music & sound, not video production

Video sync playback won't eat memory AT ALL if you dont use it,
same for 5.1 panning & routing....
think of it like Operator - if you dont use it there is no impact
on your CPU or memory useage...

I make music for theater, and being able to fire clips live and animate them in a surround (quad or 5.1) setting is a key feature for me. Right now I am using Logic for that and Logic really is not a good solution to freely fire clips, although I do get along with the surround features pretty well (although they are far from perfect)

I guess on my shiny new MacBook Pro 17" I could use rewire, firing the clips in Live, then mixing things in Logic...

But, could I make it any more complicated?...;)

i guess that if you have 5.1 implementation, it'll be pretty awkward to infuse that with the current interface.

i mean, how are you supposed to do that with the current clip envelopes? I mean, i love the clip envelopes, but to incorporate a whole set of panning shifts, it'll be more difficult to use (i assume), and will defeat the purpose of live.

i've come to realize that it'll take a little bit of time to develop an easy way to do 5.1, so i suppose in the meantime, i'll be using cubase for surround :)

5.1 means 6 discrete channels of audio, which is 6 tracks of mono audio, each going to one of 6 different mono sound card outputs. I don't think a sound designer would mix all channels at once in a single clip, even so, think of 5.1 as a scene with 6 mono channels in it. Why stop at 5.1, how about 13.2? How many speakers do you have?

Like Hoffman2k points out, use an audio rack to pan around a surround mix. Record your movements in Arrangement view and you have envelopes.

Reminds me of The Flaming Lip's album Zaireeka. 4 CDs you play at once, on 4 different CD players, this means a few things. MOST people would need a wide variety of CD players to pull this off, the nice one, the cheap one, the neighbor's player and your computer. You have to listen to it with someone else, just to start them all at once (this was 1997), so it's a social album. The slop in starting them means the album never sounds the same twice. Most of all, 8 channels of audio, f-ing cool. /end tangent
