is it really worth spending more for mac?
Thanx Raapie, that looks interesting, lots of experimental software available that I didn't know about. I've only used "Knoppix" so far because I didn't want to install Debian (don't know how anyway) and I was gobsmacked at how well everything ran. I work with graphics most of the time and am extremely impressed with GIMP, can't beleive that it's free. All the internet stuff, office suite (better than MS office) and WONDERFUL gui with up to 8 different desktops! All running from a CD rom on the fly with not a crash in sight.
Change has got to be around the corner soon, while the two hares are busy bashing each others brains out, the torsoise is steadily plodding closer.
Cheers man.

No Mac vs PC here...
I have both (an OSX & XP pro box), and I'm saving up for another Mac. Take that for whatever you want... but I would not buy another pc. Don't get me wrong, the pc has been fine... but I find myself getting more done on my Mac. That simple. And with the release of GarageBand... let's just say I think this is going to be a big year for Apple.

The main difference is this:
MACs are really cool,
and PCs are way cool.
-just about any app you can find for one has it's equivalent on the other platform.
-anyone using either for music will need, and want to learn the OS and tweak it.
-MACs are costly: if you motherboard goes down... you need to buy an Apple made MOBO for big bucks.
-everyone and their mommy makes PC parts, so they are cheap and there are heaps of crap to sift through.
-both are stable now (i am assuming you'll run XP) though MACs are probable a little more so.
-Both are available with 64bit Processors (hey... where's intel at?)
-PC are more virus Prone
-MACs have less cats, hobbiests, and enthusiasts making super cool plugins and apps for MAC OS.
Get both.
and be well!

service and quality
yes, I hear a lot of complaints about Mac's service and problems. even with the iPod.
I hope this gets better. the G5 looks interesting but you will need great support on a machine like that and spending big bugs.
for the rest: it's just a machine to me. I don't mind the brand of car I am driving. it doesn't mean anything to me.
I truly hope Linux has the future, since it's not money driven.

Let's try this little test. Compare. A glass of the, leading competitor's product. Our product. You can see the difference. Now some people would say, "This glass is empty." But other people would say, "This glass hasn't been filled yet, but when it has, I'll like what's in it!" Those are the people we're looking for. The people who look on the bright side. dammit, that brought a tear to my eye.
Makes me proud to be a citizen of the american empire, bout time a true hero like george dubbaya stood up to these freedom hatin evil doers, they oughta know their place. Good god if we don't do something we'll lose control and we can't have that, the bastards might get equal rights??!! and I for one will not stand by and watch these low lifes get stronger, take up arms against the machine and make the world listen. The 3rd world exists for a reason, an that is so we can be wealthy. God bless capitalism.

hmmmm, smacks of straw clutching - "yes I'd like to pay an extra £1000 for some kind of vague abstract reason or other please. Any will do, so long as it makes me feel like i did the right thing paying more for less"jamief wrote:I use Mac beacaue above all else it symbolises breaking away from the watch of Big brother.
Macs are for free thinkers pcs are fine though but macs as i said symbolise something untangaible - The X factor.
Choose wisely
If you're content to spend more for aesthetics and marketing spin, then go right ahead.
Personally, I think it's like fashion - essentially you're paying for a name just to look posh and hang around in a wanky elite club, all the while being out done by crusty, working class musos who just want to do the best music they can for the money, which means buying a powerful PC that eats all but VERY expensive macs for breakfast.
It's just silly.
PCs might be more 'throw away' as someone said, but then when the technology moves that fast you kind of want it to be, as you want to be able to upgrade, not get stuck with a slow, but attractive looking mac.
it's a tradition, macs used to be better, but that was the old days.

I guess all those professional musicians, film technicians, animators, etc. who use Macs all want to be part of your imaginary wanky elite club. These days, for creative work, Macs cost more but you can get more done with them. And that shows by the fact that real creative pros, not wanky forum trolls, keep buying and using Apple.
Windows and Intel hardware may be a little cheaper upfront -- actually these days the Mac overpricing hype is just hype, honestly, if anyone bothers to research prices online -- but good luck with viruses, shitty software, poor UI design, subrate hardware, esoteric driver conflicts, registry damage, etc etc etc.
You'll be replacing your PC every couple of years, not to keep up, but just to get something that doesn't bail out on you constantly.
My first PowerBook purchase was eight years ago. I only bought a replacement two years ago.
I have yet to find anyone with skillz to make Wintel junk last six years.
Not having to buy a new machine every two years means more money in the bank for me.

Microsoft's cool quotient is zero.Tallisman wrote:The main difference is this:

Agreed. It's not what you have but how you use it.Tallisman wrote:-anyone using either for music will need, and want to learn the OS and tweak it.
Bzzt. Check with your local friendly Apple repair shop. It's not nearly as expensive as you think. It is pretty close to buying any PC MOBO with a processor. You can buy a processor-less Mac MOBO and then upgrade it with a processor daughtercard...Tallisman wrote:-MACs are costly: if you motherboard goes down... you need to buy an Apple made MOBO for big bucks.
Bzzt. Much of Apple Power Macs are standard off-shelf components these days. You don't have to buy a special "Apple"-branded IDE hard drive. You don't have to buy a special "Apple"-branded video card unless you need to plug in an Apple flat-panel display.Tallisman wrote:-everyone and their mommy makes PC parts, so they are cheap and there are heaps of crap to sift through.
XP is better. It has a ways to go wrt userland-level security. Blaster should NEVER have happened if Microsoft weren't so half-assed about security.Tallisman wrote:-both are stable now (i am assuming you'll run XP) though MACs are probable a little more so.
Intel is so far away from a consumer 64-bit processor that they can sell competitively that if I owned stock, I'd be worried.Tallisman wrote:-Both are available with 64bit Processors (hey... where's intel at?)
Opteron support in the special Windows 64-bit OS is not yet available.
I'd wager that 64-bitness is probably not an issue for about 95% of the people on this forum anyway, regardless of platform.
That's putting it mildly. Macro viruses, binary viruses, VBS emailer viruses, spyware, malware, trojan horses, IE cookie vulnerabilities etc. etc. etc.Tallisman wrote:-PC are more virus Prone
The last time I personally ran into a Mac binary virus was February 1997.
Not sure about that these days. Microsoft doesn't give away developer's tools the way that Apple has since OS X 10.0. After three years, we're seeing a lot of innovative AU and audio software on OS X. Add that the recent Jack release from the open-source community. Apple is hot for hobby-level and open-source developers.Tallisman wrote:-MACs have less cats, hobbiests, and enthusiasts making super cool plugins and apps for MAC OS.
And Mac users actually seem to pay for the software they use! Professional software developers like to make money. Smart developers will make profitable choices.

mmm
the reason I bought my Sony Vaio is because it's good machine: fast running and quiet. it's a good machine although I can also imagine that a Powerbook would be good but you need to change your work a little bit probably because it will max out the CPU faster.
just today I did a test for a Live-user. at 56% CPU usage I was running 32 tracks of clips all with EQ as insert (so 32 inserts), the Filter Delay and Reverb (first class setting) on sends and the Compressor I and Compressor II and Auto Filter on output. I can send the als-file if anyone is interested.
I am happy with the machine.
the arugument that PC's won't last is not true. all my old PC's are still working fine. and yes my old iMac is also still running fine

to be honest, the last mac i owned was an LC520 and then Powerbook(190?) i used it with micrologic purely for midi until the motherboard on the powerbook fried and i couldn't afford to get another mac, and by that time pentium2 had just come out and seemed to be my ticket into the hard-disk recording world.
Since then i've spent years overcoming all the headf**k associated with windows 98 and the millions of problems along the way with cracked warez etc
Now I have an XP laptop with all legit software and ext. firewire HD and firewire 410 i/f and it rocks.
I can't speak for mac anymore, but I can't see any reason to spend more for less power just because so many professionals apparently use macs. I suppose if you can afford to, then it's like buying an OEM factory Dell machine or something, because it's been built by the company knowing what all the parts are etc.....but other than that...
I agree with previous post about needing to be more 'geeky' to use PC - I think you do have to know more, but once you do it can only be a good thing and you do pick it up as you go, so that once you get a tried and tested method and you know what to do, you can make it work easily.
