midi recording

Post by arm » Tue Jul 25, 2006 2:48 am

I am able to record audio and do 4 tracks (Live Lite), yet I am unable to get the midi recording aspect down. I went to the audio/midi set up on the computer (eMac) and did the configuring for Fast Track Pro. I can see action in the little green lights indicating a signal is being inputted-- yet to play back in midi- nothing happens.

I am not sure if I have the instruments daisy chained together correctly. I run OUT to Akai 2000 IN to Roland A90ex then back to the Fast Track m-audio.

you mean the green square midi in light at the very far top right of ableton is blinking when you hit your keyboard, yet you can't record those midi notes?

Well, this seems to be about midi routing, but I just bought the m-audio Fast Track Pro USB.

The input lights on the midi track idicate that a signal is being processed, on the bottom of the channel along side
2
s
.

LIke I said, I am coming out of a Mackie 14 channel stereo board and the Audio is being recorded fine.

Im not sure what you are trying to do anymore. You talk about recording and playback. Which doesn't work?

For recording you just need both the track record button and the global record button to be on. Just like audio.

Now to make your A90 play that recorded midi clip (I assume that is your goal here) make sure your ableton MIDI/Sync tab has a yellow button "On" under Track and Output to your Fast Track. Your midi channel also has to be setup at the Output Type box.

This has to work.

midi again

Post by arm » Tue Jul 25, 2006 8:52 pm

First off, Montreal, I want to thank you for taking the time to respond.
Second, I have no experience with this software at all. So ........little things that are so familiar to you as "A90 play that recorded midi clip " there is alot there.

Let's backtrack a bit.

I bought an Akai 2000mpc xl a few years ago. I had the A90-ex hooked up to A
and the Kurzweil PC 88 mx to B. So I recorded a bunch of stuff there.

The Toa keyboard mixer with 1 IN and 8 thro is just sitting there now.

I bought the m-audio Fast Track Pro and went

OUT m-audio to Akai IN --Akai out to Roland A90 IN A90 OUT to m-audio IN

that is the midi set-up

but

I run the audio into a 14 channel Mackie with stereo outs into the front two jacks on the m-audio and record audio just fine.

The eMac has a set up- audio and midi that I tried to do correctly-- which I am not sure about.

Then I went to the m-audio set up for midi and audio. Talked to the tech on the phone. Downloaded the most current driver.

and...............I still do not understand.

The "ableton MIDI/Sync tab" I do not see. I have a Live Lite 5.2 program.

and even this simple command " Your midi channel also has to be setup at the Output Type box" is confusing. I see the midi channel on the mixer which I have set to 1 but I don't know why.

Perhaps all of this is too much. I have a degree in Music. I am not really stupid, but I do have a learning disability.

I do not know after all this if you are still willing to help me figure this stuff out.

my e-mail is [email protected].

I certainly do appreciate your time and energy.

ok,
First,
the "MIDI/Sync" tab is under the Options menu and down to Preferences. What you set in there is crucial to everything else working.
(Live 5 on PC here. Just hoping you have the same in your menus, but I would think so.)

In there "Track" means midi NOTES are allowed in or out of whatever device for Ableton to use.
"Sync" means the same but for TIMECODE which keeps 2 machines in synchronization.
"Remote" is for assigning hardware controls to Ableton buttons like volume controls, freq. knobs and so on; but we shouldn't need this one yet.

Your FastTrack should be visible as an Input Device in there under Im not sure what name. You'll want to see a yellow "On" box besides that Device, and under "Track".

Your midi cabling sounds good.
I dont know what else to say for now.

Thanx again, but there is some "problem" as I have a Mac and it sounds like you have an IBM clone (PC)? The options menu has in it:
edit key map
edit midi map
computer midi keyboard
delay compensation

down to

search in metadata\

thats all for now

I have a "Lite" version

\I will look for and find midi sync.

I've looked at other posts--s..... this stuff gets so deep with other issues.. it's amazing how intelligent so many people are with so many wide varying ways to proceed.

THnx again, as I am a 55 year ol man who at best was a c+ blues keyboard player.

So I appreciate your patience.

Thanx again,

Montreal

No, there is a preference menu option and it opens audio set up;p midi set up; misc; plug-ins; etc.

what I do not see there is a mid/sync tab placed in between two other tabs. Track and Remote.

In tutorials on top of the screen in the Preferences window
there is

Audio Midi / sync Plug in Defaults Misc Products

Audio Midi Plug in Defaults Misc Products-(this is what I have)

and you are the only one who will answer me. not ableton, andthe customer portal for m-audio is down.

Cool,
I'm thinkin that Live 5 has that function from preferences, that is--the midi tab also says on it---sync

and the lite version only says midi

This is so ele-mental it is embarassing, but like you said --This midi/sync operation is most important.

Once again, thank you so much for the investment in your time. I think I will add a long distance service to my phone line and call m-audio, they seem to be able to answer things ok, as well.

K, Montreal,

later

It just seems weird that you are getting lights flashing on ableton when you hit your keyboard ----(right?)

yet it wont record.....

- make sure to be in Arrangement View,
- internal sync - not external,
- Global Record light on,
- midi track red Record light on,
- press play

I am looking online for what are the actual limitations of Live Lite 4, but I am having a hard time finding anything.

Keep trying; I think this should work.

Very glad to see it work!

I have struggled with that same thing for quite a while when first getting into Ableton years ago. It will come natural after a while and you will do these things without even thinking about it. The learning curve is steep for all the really neet little things Ableton can do but their manual that comes with the application is excellent; and there is always this forum.

So what kind of sounds are you going to create now?
I'd love to hear anything.........
