Logic Pro vs Ableton 6

Hi

I was considering to buy Ableton 6. The new features look all very impressive. However, I was wondering about the prizing. 600 US$ for the program, 150 US $ for operator and 200 US$ for sampler. This all brings it very close to Logic Pro 7, which boasts quite a few nice features, too.
Does anybody use both programs? Which one do you prefer??

Live: Totally more spontaneous. Non-linear. The most innovative audio software for 10 years. You can gig with it.

Logic. Higher-end sound-shaping tools built-in as standard. Better MIDI sequencing. Better audio editing and audio/MIDI automation.

THAT SAID, I use both 50/50. You can't have the best of both worlds in one app. So you have to play each to their strengths...

my 2c. I'm sure many other people will have their perspective.

Bottom line, buy Ableton.

If you buy logic you might end up like Sean Connery...

I agree with Pitch Black's points, but cost is definitely a factor. I have access to both at my school, but I plan to buy a MacBook Pro soon and with a student discount, I can get Logic Pro for $350. I'd like to have Live as well, but it's up to what, almost a grand now with all the extras?

do realize the student logic pro is not UPGRADABLE.

you will not be able to move from one version to the next, you'll be stuck with 7 if it moves to 8.

considering the prize / quality i say LOGIC all the way.
but it does depend a little on what you want to do and what your prefered working method is.

i use both, logic as my DAW for all production, recording / making tracks (to ME there is nothing, absolut nothing which touches it in that respect!)

and live as a sketch book, for DJ-ing and live performance.

obviously on this board you will find more Live heads. but it really depends a lot on what you need and how you like to work.

Logics plugins are by far superior to Lives (and most others), it's a dozen times stronger for midi, if you are not only do the simple sample quantizied sequencing stuff... and so on... better for recording accoustic studio sessions with lots of mics, more advanced routing / production possibilities, movie import, live6 is apparently getting there slowly, so if you need all that and you can wait another 2 version upgrades of live to catch up to the fullest, then buy live.

and live has it strength in the clip view, clip use. live performance / DJ-use.
it is also capable of being used as a full DAW, but still has drawbacks. that said, you might not need all those Logic features, i do, that's why i say Logic7, one more thing: Logic is so deep and advanced their is a very steep learning curve (it will take month to years to learn it to it's full complexivity) Live is so easy, it took me 3 - 4 days without looking intomthe manual to learn it completely inside out, it's rediculous easy to use...

just my 2cents, get a demo of both and try for yourself.

i agree. it's a lot about what you NEED and how you LIKE to work.

Excuse me two quick questions! Is the student version of live also non upgradeable? Is Logicpro7 only mac??

Logic Pro7 is only Mac, and i don't know the student deals whatsoever, all my software i use / get / want are NFRs, sorry.

I don't know if Apple has special restrictions on their academically-priced software, but I do know that "academic software not being upgradeable" is a common misconception.

Academic software is exactly the same as what you would buy in a store, just specially priced for students/teachers. In every case I've been involved in, I could ALWAYS upgrade my software for the standard upgrade price. IOW you don't get a discount on the upgrade price, just the initial buying price.

Once you've purchased the software the license is yours, and all the perks that go along with it, regardless of what your initial price was. Like I said, this is how it's worked for me for the past three years.

I agree, it seems it always takes two pieces of software to make a complete package (hence Rewire!). I'm using Live with Sonar (though I personally hate Rewire and don't do it).

I'm jazzed Live 6 will have multi-track wav export, for this very reason... =)

Apple does have special restrictions. like i said, you can not upgrade the student version of Logic. However Live's student version is the same one as the retail, just priced less, so you can upgrade.

live is so easy to use....the session view is so easy that it can even be a hinderance, because everything is so loop based....ultimately you end up with different songs..imo..my songs are completely different when i make them in live and not a traditional arrange view sequencer....that said...it can go both ways...

one thing for sure is logic's midi capabilities..nobody comes close..nobody..

word!, also logics enviroment is hard as sience, but once you understand it.... freakin' hell unlimited, just plain unlimited capabilities.

but yet again, it is a tough decision, Live on the other hand is so dead easy and you get results on the fly...
