I can't find it but someone posted a similar controller to the SPD that will be cheaper and not have any onboard effects, it just debuted at NAMM. Anyone remember?

Drumkat products smoke the roland pads in terms of midi flexibility, plus you don't pay for a bunch of onboard sounds that you don't need (like on the roland)
Dell Studio XPS 8100 Windows 7 64-bit, 10 GB RAM. RME Multiface, Avalon U5 & M5, Distressor, Filter Factory, UC33e, BCR-2000, FCB1010, K-Station, Hr 824 & H120 sub, EZ Bus, V-Drums, DrumKat EZ, basses, guitars, pedals... http://www.ryan-hughes.net

If you don't know, this guy is not using the sounds from the SPD-20, but Battery 2 into Ableton Live...one of the videos was made in NY, at Botanica Bar, I was there...It was amazing, and yes, you don't pay for a bunch of sounds you don't need (or...you think you don't need), but you can use thousands of others in any sampler's library, and still,if you're creative, you can play and transform the native sounds of the SPD with the effects on board and the 2 banks. :D

He is good, and he does well with his spd. All's I'm saying is for your hard earned cheddar, drumkat products offer you better pads, more pads (10 vs 8), way more control of the midi the pads send out and how they respond to stick hits (lots of velocity curves), and costs a bit less than the spd-20. The spd-20 has built-in effects, lots of sounds, more presets, but other than that it is inferior in terms of the pads and midi programability and control the user has over the unit. It is more ready to play and convieniently setup, but the drumkat has a lot more access to what's under the hood in terms of midi. For someone using a laptop setup who has battery, FL, Kontakt, sampler, etc. and plenty of drum samples, the drumkat just makes a lot more sense when you get down to brass tacks.

I'm liking the SPD-20, but right now my Yamaha DD-55c is working great for me. I use the 7 pads and 2 pedals to play Impulse kits, launch audio, video and lighting clips, etc and an FCB1010 to toggle between 8 different Impulse kits and turn effects, click track, etc on and off. The DD-55 is pretty stable on the Quik Lok stand that's made for it.
