millions and millions invested in insipid hollywood movies.
billion and billions for moronic ad campaigns.
if we start discussing about the money that's wasted in this world...

Aphex Twin
Bjork
Depeche Mode
808 State
The Prodigy
Chemical Brothers
Massive Attack
Basement Jaxx
DJ Shadow
Autechre
Boards of Canada
Moby
Fat Boy Slim
LFO
William Orbit
Future Sound of London
Kraftwerk
Underworld
Vangelis
Jarre

for example have all had their fare share of relative success.

Those I feel are succesful artists however would probably differ as I'd list ...
(I'd site these as major influences (sources of inspiration) for me also)

Human League (particularly Reproduction era material though I like a fair whack of Dare as well)
Soft Cell
Cabaret Voltaire
Depeche Mode
Bjork
Mouse on Mars
Sabres of Paradise
808 State
LFO
Aux 88
Drexicya
Future Sound of London
John Foxx
Thomas Dolby
Yellow Magic Orchestra
Kraftwerk
Murcof
Plaid
Mark Bell
Derrick Carter
Derrick May
Juan Aitkins
Sonic Animation
Underworld
Front 242
Richard H.Kirk
Oval
Arovane
Akufen
Matmos
Flanger
Burnt Friedman
Atom Heart
The Orb
Orbital
The Grid (particularly ElectricHead)

(those would rank amongst my favourites to this day quite easily).
My aren't the wings of butterflies beautiful and do they not make wonderful perturbations.....

I'd have to say Carl Craig if naming one.

Obviously I'd also say that successful to me doesn't necessarily mean fabulously wealthy. Just sucessful in getting their music out there with the artistic integrity intact.
