What the hell am I thinking - I'm not getting Logic, I had it and couldn't make music I still can't make music but at least I'm having fun with Live and I can make those sick breaks and edits I hear on dance records
I couldn't do that with Logic
But how pimp is this
MacBook (pro?)
Live 6 - depending on how I feel about Sampler in the demo w/ Sampler
Novation SL
Focus Rite Liquid Mix
Mbox 2
SONY Headphones
Couple of KRK's
a room full of records (techno, house, breaks, disco, funk, new wave, sample records, some weird esoteric shit and various rock tunes on vinyl)
2 technics
1 rane mixer
1 pioneer DJM500
A couch
A flat screen TV
XBOX 360
How's that sound? Who needs Logic when you got all that in your studio - my set-up by fall - the XBOX 360 may have to wait till XMAS but the TV and Couch are essential for making music - DUH!
F*ck Logic

Don't get Logic. You'll be so torn between it and live every time you go to start a project!
I have them both, and I got komplete 3 last year, to move completely over to Live and PC, but I just couldn't do it. Everything I make in Logic just ends up sounding great, but ableton is more fun. But Logic is so awesome. but ableton is fun. but Logic..... bla bla bla.
I dunno. I like 'em.

I wanted to adress both of these statements together.anti-banausic wrote:So, couldn't you just start a project in Live, and finish it in Logic?
In theory the work flow is so much smoother in live that it is the best place to start out a project, but more and more I have been designing sounds first in Logic and then importing them into live. I only do this with the one-hits I create in sculpture (because frankly it is an intuitive for a someone who learned music on the guitar with only a lexicon primetime delay delay processor for effects and a limited understanding of physics) and bass-lines (because I am not as OCD about these since I don't naturally listen to lower frequencies with same amount of detail, until the end of a mix, and thus audio clips as opposed to frozen files will suffice). I can simply get better results from Logic with less effort with the lack of support for my second processor.
I have a strong feeling that Sampler will either do away completely with the neccessity to start out with logic (especially with support for the second processor,) at least for my one-hits and bass-lines.
Typically from this point I will then sequence everything in live because it doesn't crash, and I love the workflow. It is such a wonderful experience, especially in contrast to Logic!!! Unfortunately the lack of utility in live for varying time changes is still a limitation, whereas in logic it is all available but a treatcherous feat beyond what I imagine ableton will soon (hopefully before 7) implement.
Finally, there is something to be gained by bringing the tracks back into logic, as it has very power pc friendly cpu use for it's effects, and since it is not designed to be ran in realtime (like, thankfully, Live is) things run very smoothly without having to freeze very much.
Perhaps the need for both will go away after this release of Live or the next. I have to say though, that as an owner of both, there is, IMO, a psychological benefit of having more than one DAW. It is sort of like checking your math. I find that if I don't have the patience to check an important math problem, I am either in bad form, or I am lacking integrity in both my understanding of the material, the procedure, or technique. This may be OCD, but by investigating the possibilites of finalizing/auditioning seperate elements in different environments, the resulting material can be prepared more objectively, and, again, IMO, stand alone as a representation of it'self, rather than as a sleek showcase for one's dynamic response to any one particular DAW (or in Live's case-instrument/sequencer/talisman of the gods.)
If I could only have one of the two it would be Live. If I could one have one in general I would choose live, but that is the girly-man answer. The Macho-man, and the ultimately the most rewarding (with regards to my OCD) would be MAX/MSP. Of course who needs MAX/MSP when you could just hard-code your own object based programming language in C+ and then build robots to design your own DAW's? Hell, you could just grab some sticks...
Realistically I believe Live is the most reliable, but it needs improvement for finalization and editing if you are going beyond dance. The easy going 4/4 structure is really fun and hard to break out of. I qualify my projects by my abilty to bring them into Logic and transcend this generic grid. I hate logic's workflow, so honestly, I am dissapointed with virtually all of my purely electronic music. It feels so good to jump behind the kit in my band.
Had to share. I got a scary test in German tommorrow and I needed a break from studying. This is one of my favorite topics.
Thats not the trend @ the moment.anti-banausic wrote:So, couldn't you just start a project in Live, and finish it in Logic?
Its always gotta be one thing vs another..Logic vs Live, Operator vs Absynth, Reason vs Reaktor (Cubase vs Logic...I am not gonna go there
I understand why alot of us use Live more and our other sequencers less now, I find its easier to sketch ideas and alot more fun to play with, but if you close your eyes to everything else and start with the ***k that attitude I think you'll miss out (Ignorance is bad for you, and if you bounce your files into logic after you could do even more or get a different possibly better sounding tune afterwards).
Don't breed in weakness..no matter what programs you like to use, keep an open mind. You may find some of these programs can actually help/inspire you. And they can do different things using different approaches. You don't have to be monogamous, programs don't suffer from jealousy. So the whole point of this topic is absolutely pointless. Logic Pro vs Ableton 6 (Variety is the spice of life).
Ok Continue on.

I think that one of my problems is that I have too much fun with Live, and combined with school, I end up sketching things in Live, but never finishing them.
I think that with Logic, linear sequencing and mastering, I would be forced to finish things. The only thing that is making me finish things at the moment are gigs, because I float my own tracks in to others every now and then.
Just a thought. Sometimes the linear sequencing limitation may be a boon.

I have exactly the same problem. I used to finish things in Cubase, but I use Live so much now and for some reason I can never finish anything. I need to sort this out asap.anti-banausic wrote:I end up sketching things in Live, but never finishing them.

I agree with most of what you're saying but many people can't afford to just get a bunch of everything, especially all at once. that's why people need the x vs. y debates. It helps them figure out what would be best for them if they can only have one.kineticUk wrote: So the whole point of this topic is absolutely pointless.

And although i'm conflicted as to which daw to use sometimes, I usually like to open up live, except that I never get it sounding as good as logic, much of which has to do with logic's included instruments and effects, especially the EQ's, compressors/dynamics and reverbs. But that's not bashing live at all, I love it and it sounds good. I'm just always surprised when I go and open a song done in Logic, at how great it sounds.
So yea, I should definitely start importing Ableton songs back into logic, but I too suffer the same as many of you - never finishing a song in ableton because it's more fun to play around, jam, or start something new. But that's nobody's fault but our own I suppose.
Anyways, for the original poster: If you really want to play live and sequence on the fly/improvise, get Live. If you're more into composing, not minding the usual linear sequencer fashion, and want an amazing instrument and effects bundle, Get Logic.
peace
