Warning: Do not use Garageband to mix. It sucks. I'm about to just take it off of my powerbook for good. It's just wasting space. Ableton Live 5, Logic Express 7, Melodyne Uno, Pluggo-that's all I use now. I am a closet FL Studio user on the PC though. Even Logic Express has a steep learning curve compared to Live. I haven't rewired them yet. Does this work pretty well? Anyone?

find a friend who is a student
and have them buy you logic pro 7

check out the edu apple store you'll see logic pro 7 for $499

1/2 price for a full version!!!

Save a few more pennies and buy a second hand copy of Logic Pro for $500. There are a lot of small but very useful features stripped out of Express that all add up to a significantly less powerful host, more important than the extra plugs IMO.

But also be prepared for a steep learning curve. It's worth it but it's painful at first. READ THE MANUAL!!

How is Logic express any bit easier than Logic pro 7? I am really curious! My understanding is that beyond limitations in track numbers and instrument, Apple uses the "cripple-ware" technique of taking out some of the most direct and useful commands and navigation methods, thus encouraging people to buy big and have a smoother work flow. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Has anyone else noticed a sudden spike in the number of recent logic threads on this board this week? I have a theory for this:

All of us closet Logic users, not so closted logic abusers, and those of us who want the massive eutopian all-in-one DAW are realizing, consciously or unconsciously the same thing:

Live six will have sick routing features, ready-to-go, native support for select midi-controllers, dual processor support, project manager, and one of the most exciting sound design insrtuments since sculpture (the deciding factor in buying Logic pro for me.)...

I think that live is going for the throat, and they are pulling some serious Borg style action and devouring all of the selling points of Logic. I LOVE what I am seeing.

For an introductory x amount a beginner can buy the instrument/tool that is live. For y amount more the novice or developing DAW user can easilly attain results that are comperable to Logic. A pro can then compensate easilly with 3rd party plugins, or the time 7 comes out I am willing to bet that the new effects and editing features will surpass logic, even on the conventional playing ground.

Logic has been a sinking ship for some time. I think there will be plenty of new rats over here in the near future...

I'm in exactly the opposite boat. All the things I hoped were coming in Live 6 to make it more usable as a full blown DAW and tolerable for complex arrangements didn't happen, so I'm back to working in Logic mostly. Perhaps other people are coming to the same conclusions? I'll still use Live as a sketchpad and idea machine but I'm done trying to do detailed arrange work for this iteration of Live.

Personally I wouldn't waste my time with Logic Express. It's not really any simpler than Pro and you'll just develop bad workflow habits because of the missing key commands and functions.

Realising that Live 6 will still not allow time signature changes I'm starting to consider these two as well. I really wish DP had a demo. Do you currently finish tracks in Live?

your post isn't stupid, lots of people here use ableton with any number of other programs at the sametime. plugins, other daws, wav editors, it's all of interest here.

I wonder what you expect from Logic. Logic might be a good application if you need a pro studio app for doing all kind of audio jobs in the studio. The price is that its not an instrument like Life is. IMHO it doesn't tweak your creativity, it's just a tool.

So if you need a tool for daily audio work, Logic will be a good addition to Life. Life has so many drawbacks when it comes to major projects, that it's a good idea to take your Live demo to Logic and mix it in Logic. The workflow in the arrangement is quite good in Logic, the bus and aux system is not great, but gives more options than Live. Also, you can connect several Macs to a cluster for more cpu power.
If you are a hobbyist Logic is IMHO a waste of time and money, if you just want to do a few electronic music tracks, Live is perfect. Also, now that Aplle has done the Intel switch, you won't get a stable and working system if using an Intel Mac for about 1 year if you want to use the common plug-ins.

and yes it is an ableton live forum and this thread is not stupid, we live in a democracy, so the abletons have to live with the fact, that they are not alone on the market and some people do recommend something additional... no one ever said to dumb live for logic, but it is and remains a superb addition, for the people who want or need more.
simply because it does deliver more. if you personally don't like nore need it, then simply don't buy it and stick with live only, nothing wrong with that.

I render in Live but often apply finishing touches in either Peak or Quattro. I've seen some great second hand deals on DP, so I may go that route.
