Firewire works perfectly, I'm on PC, and have no problems whatsoever with it, and I'm not alone on this one.

I don't have an RME card, but as they have said, I haven`t ever heard of a bad comment about them.

AND DON'T GET ANYTHING WITH PCMCIA!!! DON'T!!! PCMCIA is bound to change for express card.
Turn up the radio. Turn up the tape machine. Look into the sunset up ahead. Roll the windows down for a better taste of the cool desert wind. Ah yes. This is what it's all about. Total control now.

not sure if you've had bad experience, but firewire is a solid and tested solution for audio soundcards like RME's fireface 400 and 800. As far as I know, there is no difference between firewire implementation on macs and pcs other than the manufacturer of your firewire chipset (texas instruments is top choice for pcs). Other than that, they should work in exactly the same way, and with a solid interface like a fireface, you are good to go. If you are going to drop big bucks, it would be wisest to get something that will last for years and suit your needs next time you get a new computer. Firewire is probably the smartes choice at this point, since the interface can work easily on a desktop or laptop, mac or pc, with no extra adapters/cards to buy.

desktops have pci slots on the back--as far as I know, nothing has changed with these, and there's no plan to phase them out.

laptops on both mac and pc platforms don't have pci slots, they have pcmcia slots which are roughly equivalent in speed to pci, but much smaller. New macbook laptops don't have pcmcia slots, they have express card slots. Also, many new pc laptops don't have pcmcia cards either. While there is word that some manufacturers are working on adapters to let people with pcmcia products (like my RME multiface) use express card slots, but as far as I know none exist. The word on the street is that pcmcia will be phased out on all new laptops in 3 or so years. So buying a pcmcia audio interface at this point isn't nearly as wise as buying a firewire one, especially since firewire works on a desktop or laptop.

Mackie onyx rocks! Got the 16 chanel version. Exelent quality, exelent preamps and eqs. Perfect for live giging, if you got hardware instruments and mics. if not, go RME.

ONyx has 16 inputs, firewire! 24bit/196khz.
