No sound after installation (edu ver Live 5.2.1 for windows)

I install the educational version of Live 5 for windows... No sound.

I download and install the update... Still no sound.

But when I use Live lite 4 on this computer everything works fine.

I uninstall Live lite 4... No effect.

I restart my computer... No effect.

Only when I record a sound, render it to disk and play it with another program do I actually hear anything. For obvious reasons I would like to be able to hear the sounds I'm recording with my M-Audio keyboard as they're being recorded.

How does one go about fixing this?

have you been into preferences to see if outputs are enabled? or checked to see if the master out is routed in the master track?
