Idea: The Rack and LFO
Idea: The Rack and LFO
Oooh, Ableton. You're THIS close to hitting the motherlode with the rack fx. Messing with an idea this afternoon, I was looking for a way to automate the decay time of a reverb with an lfo. I dropped the 'verb into an audio effect rack and started trying to map the decay to a macro knob. Of course, you can't route one set of fx to another, but if you could...
Imagine: you route the lfo from, say, the Autofilter, to the decay time of the Reverb, all inside the rack. Now you've got semi-generative capabilities, being able to route parameters from any device to any other device. Should work, since you can already automate any of that stuff. Yes, you can sort of work around this with automation envelopes, but you have to build those by hand--being able to "wire" devices together, that adds all kinds of potential for semi-random sound generation, a la Reason/Reaktor/Fruity's peak controller.
Probably way beyond the scope of Live 6, but it's tantalizingly close to reality...

imagine this would be the 4th tab on the Rack?
controlling the macro knobs by lfo?
aaaaaaaaaaahhhh..
this mock-up is pretty dated now..
can be much smaller and smarter..
Yeah I've been wanting an LFO plug-in for a while, plus a simple ADSR one too (just those 4 knobs ADSR)
and now since Live 6/sampler it would be really cool to have a standalone "resynthesis" plug-in - like the OSC section of the sampler
but then it hit me, the simplest way to do all of this is to just alllow audio in to the sampler - even also have a record button and let it "sample" (there's a novel idea! a soft sampler that actually samples!) but most of all just let audio through so you can use all it's parameters in real time
but yes, some kind of internal midi routing as well - maybe it could work like macro mapping does - right click on the knob/parameter choose "function map" or whatever then go and select the other knob you want it to operate.
Uber cool
I also had a thought at one point that right click "instant lfo" would be a cool idea - so you right click the knob, choose "instant automate" or "instant LFO" and it gives you a dialog with the basic parameters of an LFO, choose what you want, click
for Live 8 or 9 maybe!

if you haven't messed with FLStudio's peak controller, i encourage you to check it out. basically, it is an envelope follower with an LFO that can map to any device's parameters. so, you put envelope follower on a drum track and map the volume envelope of the drums to the filter freq of a synth. now your synth's freq follows the drums. it's awesome.
the rack is starting to hint at those capabilities within Live.
of course, this isn't a bug, so, sorry for getting off topic.
just had to point out the potential that got my adrenaline flowing...

I used to use peak controller in fruityloops all the time, it was so fun to play with that on effects. the only thing I didn't like about it is that it's random wave form wasn't random at all it was some sort of equation that did the same thing every time you played the song. (at least it didn't seem to loop it's pattern though)
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

This is calling to be there!!!
Would be nice to be able to control the Macro controls with key velocity too for some truly expressive patches...Poster wrote: yep.. me too..
