Frequency analysis

Ok so let's say I've got a sample and I wanna EQ it...

Is there a way of determining which frequencies are active, maybe have this information displayed in a bar graph display. I ask because I think it would allow me to understand which frequencies were interferring with the sound

I kind of feel that I've understood how eqing works a bit backward, would I be able to get rid of unwanted frequencies if I knew which frequencies were apparent at particular points of the sample?

I don't know how to do it in Live, but I'd recommend Har Bal. This is a great mastering tool, but will serve your purposes as well. When you load a sample, it analizes, and draws the "frequency." This is great, but what it makes the real choice is that in the meantime you can load a previously selected reference file, thus you can compare the two files visually.

Any decent stand alone wave editor will have a spectral analyser in it, allowing you to see the frequncy hotspots in your samples.

the freeware version of cooledit will do the job.

Wow you guys are awesome... I've been wondering about how to do this (and whether it can be done, even though it seems obvious now) for ages, but never thought to ask...

The spectral analysis looks like it takes a bit to get my head around, but that and har bal are precisely what I'm looking for.

Now i'm going to just have to put the time in to figure out how to use them...

And before I can even reply theres another post, damn I love this place

the X axis is Time, the Y axis is Frequency. Colour is Amplitude

The brighter the colours the more dominant that Frequency is at that particular time.

Can you adjust the Y-axis to make it logarhythmic? It seems odd to have it linear, when so much information is obviously below 2kHz.

google for voxengo span. nice freeware VST spectrum analyser, you can use it inside live to see what's going on with your sounds.
