linux based audio - raapie? anyone else got info?

A good friend of mine got the Debian distro a while back and said that it was a real headache to install. I hope that these new music distributions are a little more dimwit friendly, because he has MUCH more experience than me and had a real hard time with it. I wouldn't have a hope of even getting it installed! Mind you, the Debian package is supposed to be the most advanced distro.

Well after having to restart the Debian download and then waking up to find that I'd accidently pointed the restart to a disk that hadn't enough space... arghhh... well, I spent most of the night reading the Debian installation manual and I'm not going to bother. I found some links to Mandrake optimisation scripts (or something) so I'm giving to give this a go in the 10 or so hours that the download will take... argh!!!

My mate ordered his online. You just pay for the disc and postage. It came to about 15 uk pounds I think. My version of Knoppix came that way too. Cost me a tenner. It's a hell of a download unless you're lucky enough to have broadband.

It might be worth e-mailing the guys at Ableton about that one, someone there might of tried it, or know someone who has.

don't you guys down there have broadband yet? Where in cornwall are you martyn, I even have it in my little village now, I didn't think many didn't now, but then you have good butter, gingerbread and cider, what more could one possibly need??!!

I have been fighting Debian Linux for 20 hours now.

It won't see the graphics card in my iBook. It just won't. I'm practically in tears... (well, not really...). I'm thinking about doing my fourth clean reinstall. This takes an hour and a half. I don't know. I just don't know.

I've read the websites about Linux and iBooks yet still hit the brick walls as I've never used Linux nor UNIX prior to today. I've downloaded some extra drivers and am supposed to link two files relating to the X window manager... but I cannae as one of them don't exist. It's frustrating as fck.

Anybody done this fancy giving me the idiots guide?

If you want to run Linux on a Mac with good driver support, download an ISO of Yellow Dog:

I haven't run Debian so I don't know what it's like, but YDL is mostly solid all around.

There is broadband in cornwall, just not where I bloody live. The exchange is only half a mile down the road too but BT insist that 500 people have to request it before they'll upgrade it. The list is up to 250 so far but there arn't many more people left to vote. Unless you count the ones just into pubs and cows...and sheep

Raapie, we managed to get sound out of Knoppix with an SB Live, those sort of drivers get found automatically. You may not have much luck with anything pro level.

It's probably best to go straight to one of the new music distros I think, instead of bothering with Debian at all, it's for scientists only!

There's no way any of this stuff is going to catch on unless somebody makes it easier to get your head around.

Cheers Alex but won't Yellow Dog give me tonnes of crap & extra features that I don't need? I'd be able to get a nice, lean Debian system going if it'd just speak to my video card... arrhh!!

Still fighting this piece of... something!

I'm learning quite a bit about Lunix though. Considering that I'd never so much as seen yesterday afternoon, I think I'm doing well.

It's just one thing that's causing me bother, though, and that's getting the GUI to work. Everything else is behaving like it should (web-access, FTP, file handling) so I've no reason to believe that there'll be any troubles later on (touch wood!)

I don't use Linux on PPC too much. Most folks I support with PPC hardware (i.e. Apple hardware) have stuck with OS X. Most of my setup and repair experience with Linux is on x86 hardware.

That said, LinuxPPC and YDL are excellent distributions, among many:

A distro really comes down to drivers for video, energy management, etc. -- the things that make Apple hardware "special" and development more tricky, compared with generic x86, for which driver support is much easier to find or hack together.
