Depends who you know - if one of your old mates is still there after a while you can probably still get some good deals, but nothing like the old employee discount. And since the average lifespan of a GC employee is 3 months, chances are the next time you go back there won't be anyone there you recognize, so break out your haggling skills.

 i used to work there

Deals? I suppose you could call it a deal. The only item GC sells that my current employer doesn't sell that I needed was one of those light bulbs for my gooseneck BNC mixer lamp called Lil'Lite or something. I needed the bulb and when I showed at their shop to get one my good buddy Pete was behind the counter.

When he rang me up he said he'd hook me up, and he really did try. He banged away at the keyboard of the register for what felt like 5 minutes. Finally he said "Sorry dude, it's going to be nine bux, that's as low as this thing will let me sell it for."

$9 for a bulb that's smaller than my pinkie nail. And I got hooked up. Imagine if I was buying something more substantial.

When I used to work there we had this horrible tyrant of a general manager named Tim Miller. He was a hideous prick. He used to warn us of horrific consequences if we got caught giving an ex-employee any sort of discount at all. When Pete hooked me up for my bulb purchase he was sticking his neck out. It is good having a homie on the other side of the counter.

How was it dealing with the noise of mostly bad musicians and the attitude in general of some guys? How big was the discount?

Tim Miller is probably sitting in his home theater, projecting the 6ft tall faces of the Petes he employs onto his wall, while running through their histories of Lil'lite sales to see if there has been any discounting offered.

You may be offering your homie a job at your new place quite soon
