dell inspiron 6400?

Post by heyfreak » Sun Aug 06, 2006 6:25 am

Hey guys! im not sure if this is the right place to ask this, if not, tell me...;)

Im about to buy a laptop on which i plan to use ableton live for doing live sets and etc.

Ive been reccomended a lot the Dell Inspiron 6400 (instead of 512, 1 gb of RAM)....i know that its heavy but that wouldnt be a con..

So what im asking is if anyone can tell me if youve had any experience with this laptop or any of the previous Dell notebooks...id like to know a bit about what people have to say about these Dell notebooks, so if you can help me, please do!! :)

I produce with reason and live plus plugins and a couple more things and i would be using it only for audio composition...ive read in some comparison test, that this laptop beats the vaio, toshiba, mac laptops...(some of them of course i suppose)

Ill be waiting for your help! :!:

What is most important is what kind of CPU that is inside.

I got an Alienware Area-51 m7700 laptop, and I absolutely LOVE it.

It has an Intel Pentium 4 Processor 531 w/ HT Technology (3.0GHz), 1Gb of memory, a 120 Gb RAID 0 hard drive (2 60Gb drives in a RAID 0 array), GeForce Go 7800 GTX video card, and the most beautiful 17" widescreen LCD that I've ever seen.

When it comes to Alienware the desktops seem pretty overpriced, but the notebooks are extremely comparable to other manufacturers. My only gripe was how awful the onboard sound card is, but if you're doing any sort of music production/performance, there's no way anyone would rely on ANY laptop onboard sound. Gotta get something external.

Oh, and I don't use mine for performing live, but for those of you that do, the Alienware aesthetic is AWESOME.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 that I was using to run Ableton and a few other applications and I never had any problems. I've got mine maxxed out with 2GB of ram and an external harddrive for additional storage space. Like was mentioned before if the CPU, hard drive speed, memory is good then you should have no trouble. I got my Inspiron off of ebay for under a grand and then added the additional memory, reinstalled a fresh copy of XP optimized for audio, installed my applications and off I was.

I've got an Inspiron 6400 and I'm having all sorts of problems with Ableton :( The sound just cuts out and stops every 10 minutes or so.

If you do end up getting one - please let me know how you go with it.

I'm using aan inspiron 6400 with 2GB ram and a 2.16Ghz Dual Core processor. No complaints at all. It runs live perfectly (touch wood). I have just re-formatted it too, so I can get rid of all the Dell crap they pile on it. The Dell's do coem with a warranty so if anything goes wrong, call them!
