since logic is now now more for PCs...

Post by Moogulator » Mon Jul 01, 2002 8:48 pm

I am on mac, but why not:
ableton could make a nice midi engine including 808/electribe-type-sequencing (still missing in ANY sequencer exept reason)..

good chance now!! (really NOW!!)..

and please: no pc/mac or emagic wars here.. it was just a nices word to ableton..

any1 supports me?? I would really love a midi engine for LIVE stuff and arranging live.. (and studio,too).. including VST2 synths (virtual ones)..

any chance?

Emagic sold to mac

Post by twelve » Wed Jul 03, 2002 3:44 pm

I believe logic and PC's are dead as emagic was just bought by apple and they said they will discontinue use for pcs

The midi discussion has been hammered away in another post:

My Vote:

Sequencer: NO

VSTi: Yes

why no sequencer? (remember: it should be a LIVEable sequencer!!.. not a copy of logic or cubase..)

for vst you'd need some midi stuff esp. for softsynth (thats my thought behind it, using reaktor or something.. with ableton as the only host)
why? its better and more stable and better to keep track of if you only need to watch just ONE host application..

Reasons being:

a) Live is a sequencer already, adding another sequencer on top of it would seem like overkill and i worry the simple interface could become, well, non simple

b) Reason via rewire already offers a midi type sequencer

c) I personally have not seen the light with midi, though find the ability to add a host of new synths via software that i can actually play interesting

MIDI wet dream

Post by neuronaut » Wed Jul 03, 2002 4:01 pm

I think this subject has been brought up a lot. From what I understand, Ableton has a different vision. And more power to them! Hopefully, we shall be as pleased with version 2. MIDI has been around forever. To me, it seems clear after years of flakey software crashes, that Ableton has made a bold statement with a bomb-proof-as-possible software package. Perhaps an announcement by Ableton of its' official stance on MIDI would help.

Besides, there are MANY audio quality issues to address first.

logic is ANTI PC!!!

Post by neuronaut » Wed Jul 03, 2002 4:08 pm

Also, logic was bought by APPLE!!!!!! Apple is discontinuing development/support for Logic PC and focusing on Logic for Mac!! Cubase is taking over the PC market!!!! Steinberg is offering a deal to logic users!!! http://www.harmony-central.com/News/200 ... grade.html

frickin' funny! :p

all those PC logic users are pissed! and all those mac cubase users are getting ignored because steiny wants the PC market more!

The mac/pc war just got uglier.. now the software is proprietary... ouch...

long live ABLETON!

I think a point that I am starting to hit is MIDI controlled plug-ins (FX)

A lot of interesting plug-ins are starting to be MIDI-controlled, for that we need MIDI.

I would love to see a sister MIDI app that intergrated with live. A sequencer that can handle VSTi etc.

RE: Logic

Apple now has

1. Guys that wrote OMS
2. Guy that wrote SuperCollider (REspected high-end synth language)
3. Logic Guys

pretty serious.

I like the idea of a sister app, and while Propellerheads have done a great job, I always find myself using a VSTi instead of Subtractor once I am past the 'sketch' stage of a song. (Malstrom evens things up a bit - like what I've heard so far.)

I'm sure at some point Ableton will want to expand their product line, and a midi/VSTi sequencer connected via ReWire is a very intriguing possibility. I'd like to see how Ableton would do it - I use Cubase and I hardly use most of its features. I could live with just VSTi support and midi groove file support.

XXXXXACTLY!!
thats why I am thinking of a nice but simple arrangement midi-sequencer in the style of the audio stuff!!.. means: you got something to trigger the plugs, softsynths and external synths with (I still gig with one powersynth.. so some sort of "mpc"-fireing up-midi-sequenes, would save one sequencer (one box less!!) on stage...

opening logic, ableton and reson?? ok, works, but thats not cool on just one machine, no matter if its a mac or pc..

emagic/apple: they got real "brainers" now!! so I expect a good thing here.. emagic always had good relationship to apple and btw: emagics founders are not that poor.. so maybe that decision was intended by mangement..

personally, i don't like emagic HARDWARE at all.
we had shitty audiowerk8's at work and it like crashed once a day, at least. we're a professional recording studio for advertising, and i would say: "we know what we're doing".
after trashing the audiowerks, we installed RME's and it all works perfectly now. so apple go on and buy yourself emagic. you'll not like the hardware.
as for SOFTWARE:
i never tried logic cuz i grew up with cubase. and the after using live for the first time, it was clear to me to take a huge dump on that oldskool MIDI stuff. now don't get me wrong, i still use MIDI alot, to assemble the loops, but i can't stand the look of cubase anymore. trillions of windows, always in the way, drag 'em here, drag 'em there, FUCK.
thank god you guys at ableton did the right thing.
cheers
