Howdy,
When my ableton scans for vst plugins on startup it crashes is there any way i can reset the prefrences so it does not scan so i can at least get it running to find out wich vst is causing the problem ...................
I found a thread saying delete the prefrences file in the Doc&settings/ableton folder but i am unsure wich file to delete,
Any help greatly appriciated

... but what if you're a newb dumbass such as myself who retardly set his vst search folder to "C:\" after finishing the tutorials in Live 4.0.1 ....
For me in Win XP, Live crashes before I can get in and change it. Obviously, I can't move every plugin .dll from the C:\ drive easily. Reinstalling changes nothing as the settings are retained somewhere (I'm assuming the registery ?). I haven't found any obvious settings files, nor registery entries
... any help would be greatly appreciated so I can move out of FL Studio and into Live as I anticipate a much awaited switch to a MacBook Pro & OSX.

i dunno where live would stash its prefs on a pc...
forget about the registry - the file ur looking for is called preferences.cfg.
maybe search by name?
ur best bet is to ask ableton support, unless someone else who parlez microbotch?
and do ur self a favour, dont assign the whole c drive for plugins.
// i have answered this type of question so many times, someone should turn this topic "live crashes when it scans my vst plugins" into a permanent sticky... (apologies if this has already been done!)

Success.
All the user preferences are in "C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Ableton". I uninstalled Live, deleted this folder, and reinstalled.
I tried renaming just the Preferences.cfg file, but Live craps out with a serious error. (Was hoping it would recreate a default file or something.) I don't know the encoding for the data in the Preferences.cfg as its not ASCII, otherwise I would have just changed the folder that way
Everything is good now. Thanks.
