Voice effects in live

Post by gloomer » Mon Aug 07, 2006 5:24 am

I haven't found anything for this on google so it must be really easy.

I'm trying to use my voice live on a mic that has vocoder effects on.

I also want it live, i.e no delay from my mic to the P.A

I fiddled with the return tracks and stuff but couldn't figure anything out.

I'm just not configuring the i/o properly.

I think you put the effects on the return track and somehow relay it to the mic audio track.

I donno. I've fiddled as much as I can. Can't someone give me some really noob friendly instructions?

Peace and thanks so much for the help.

Hey gloomer-

First off, what are you using for a vocoder?

well i'll pretty much use anything right now.

A selection from live's effects and stuff.

Distortion. I'm not just limiting myself to vocoder's

I just need to know how this works.

aha. Fair enough. It should be as easy as putting the effect on the track, arming it, and then speaking into the mic. Live doesn't have a built-in vocoder, but there are a few great free ones out there. Also, just to make sure, are your soundcard and mic configured properly? Probably a stupid question, but sometimes the simplest things are the most overlooked.

that actually works.

the only problem now is the delay.

There is a slight delay from the time i speak to the time it comes out eh speakers.

It's weird cuz it's like an actual delay.

Like when you tap the mic. it repeats three times out the speakers.

Each one getting smaller and smaller like as if i put an actual delay on it.

But there isn't any delay on it.

My i/o settings are.

Audio from: Ext. in

thanks for helping

you can use this free dx vocoder

http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/4ormulatorDX/

it's dx, so you'll have to use a wrapper like this free one, ffx-4

Argh. I just figured somethin out.

There's a freaking delay on everything.

I play a track then stop it quickly and I hear a small echo delay.

ARGH. I don't even have any delay on that track.

EDIT:

Ok I quit live and went back to the original template.

No delay. But I still have delay on the mic.

Help me.

Your mic is probably picking up the sound coming from your speakers. That and a little bit of processing lag as the sound goes through your computer makes an echo-style delay.

All right.

the reason there was a delay on my main tracks was cuz when my mic was on it picked up the music from the speakers and from the mic back to the speakers.

Thus the delay.

What can I do to get my mic so it doesn't pick up noise form the speaker
s.

That's my real problem

I need it so my mic does not pic up the noise from the speakers.

move further away from the speakers or point them away from the mic, or for even less feedback use headphones :?

I use headphones, and then after you've recorded, play it back on your speakers. It's a bummer to have to switch back and forth, but that's probably what you'll have to do.
