i know that someone's favorite synths are always going to be specific to a person's taste and style; but i wonder if alot of you out there are using many of the same hardware and/or software synths to create sounds and produce tracks in the "minimal" genre, and even to perform them in conjunction with LIVE.

i just started exploring synths myself (i need a decent one to accompany my 909!), because i want to start using live as a production tool (to produce minimal tracks) other than mainly for djing.

it'd be a great help if i could get some ideas and suggestions from the fellow minimal-heads out there who are already doing this....

i reckon you could just about use any synth for minimal stuff... probably not the answer you where after

no snyth is aimed to a particular music style, take your time to learn to understand how a synth works and how to program your sounds.
don't let you fool by the presets, some synths have tonns of trancey sounds out of the factory -like my microQ for example- but once you know how it works you can do *quite* whatever you want with a synth
On the internet you'll find tonns of synthesis tutorials, it could be a good starting point.

I would recomend you take a look at some of the classics. Pro53, juno's where used in many house tracks, big chunky chords. You could look at things like the Minimonsta and ImpOSCar. All of synts are pretty simple to program and have a lot of sound creating power. Also you may want to look into some FM synths, FM7 being the most famous. That sound was often used to get that super hard bell like sound that was popular in the early 90's Detroit Techno, stuff you would hear on lables like Fragile. Producers like Terance Dixon, Boo Williams and so on. You can work with the FM elements in synths like the oddity to get some FM sounds but it is not the same.

real genuine minimal tecno doesnt use any synths at all..in fact the best
minimal tecno ive ever heard was complete silence..-----

I know the elektron gear is very popular with the minimal folks. Maybe because it is made in sweden.

and thanks for the idea about the polyiblit. i think i will definitely start there and try to learn the ropes with it, because it's FREE.

--does anybody have any views on the ACCESS VIRUS and NORD LEAD/MODULAR/ELECTRO lines of synths for producing minimal??

Sure, apply a high pass filter and turn the master volume way down so you can barely hear them
