Wanting realistic evaluations on Emac G4 1ghz 1gig ram .

Post by FaX » Sat Jan 17, 2004 3:35 am

I need to know what the realistic performance evalution of this system would be with just Live and PLuggo , an audio firewire drive and nothing else bar a Tascam USB midi/sound card please.
IE:cpu drain ,speed ,number of tracks ,functionality etc etc etc ...
Getting desperate here.
I know I've got PC options but I'm no tech-head and have no idea how to optimise a PC for audio use .
So can someone please help me out here.
As it's about all that is in my budget .
Thankyou.

If I had an Emac here I would have already  .
This is not my PC / it's an Athalon with inbuilt sound /no midi etc ...
My 100% hardware setup is over the other side of the room 8O .
I wanted some input from Mac users here.
So unless I buy an Emac first and try it out later I have no hope in hell of knowing do I :? .

Are you near an Apple Store? Computer lab? Friend with a Mac with similar or close specs?

well there are a lot of happy Mac users here and i don't think too many of us are running machines faster than 1 ghz. the fastest (mhz wise) machine i've owned is my 867 mhz 12" PowerBook and i'm quite satisfied with the performance. i think the eMac would do quite nicely. i have been thinking about getting one recently to take some load of my laptop. check out what this guy has done with his eMac to make it a pretty powerful little machine.

weird how Apple arranges jumpers to intentionally underclock the CPUs.

I'm not sure Apple underclocks so much as sells computers that they advertise with specific characteristics. Semiconductor companies like Motorola sell companies like Apple bins of processors that are rated at a certain speed. The "bin" is tested in the factory to run reliably at that speed. There are bins tested for higher speeds that have higher costs per chip. A computer company can always overclock a less-expensive chip, but then reliability goes down.

A big thanks to both of you ..

Thanks for replying so an Emac g4 it is then ;).
I'll be able to run Cellsynth in Classic Mode and U&I software are currently coding the Metasynth bundle for OSX ...
I want to use Xx for sequencing the Emu stuff ;).
So I won't bother with Reason  ....
Pluggo + Live my AW/DAW ,EIII hd keyboard and fullyloaded MP-7 should do me nicely for the time being. (And reduce the clutter)
Now I've just got to sell that mountain of hardware in the corner  .
Once again thanks guys.
The time taken to respond is much appreciated.

I've been using the 800mhz eMac for a little over a ear now, and it's a prety nice machine. I can run 8 to 12 tracks of audio thru live without any problems. However, adding effects really s l o w s everything down. I can run 4-6 track with effects (except the reverbs, which really eats up the cpu.)

That was very helpful.

Thanks Captain Magic , I'm actually plumbing for the 1.25ghz Imac 17" instead with an ultra fast audio specific Firewire drive.
All reverbs ,delays ,amp modelling etc will be handled buy my DAW.
I was more interested in the resonators ,grain delays ,warp markers etc etc of Live . I know Reverb is a Major CPU hog and most hardware out does the software counterpart in the reverb stakes IMHO.
My DAW handles 16 tracks with 8 track simultaneous record.
has all the dynamics processors I need (independent for each track as is the 4 band parametric eq).
So I'm pretty sure I'll get enough working flexibility with the system in everyday use using external Hardware recording + a couple of TC rack units.
Thanks for the user clarification though ;).

pssssst sorry
