Flickering menus in Win XP

Only Ableton live is suffering from flickering menus (file menu etc.), all other applications work fine.

The flickering dissapears when I dissable Directdraw hardware accelleration on my video card (Nvidia TNT).

Is this a known issue??

Disable shadows and any kind of visual effect in XP and that problem goes away.

Okay, that worked. But now I got the feeling I cured the problem without taking away the cause.

I think this one is a note to the programmers. The graphics routines are not optimized for XP.

As long as it is about audio, you will always get in conflict with grafics - if it doesn't occupy your CPU, it occupies some bus. So there's not too much to optimize as long as you load all this extra time grafics onto your machine, audio is verrry demanding!. I'm using classic Windows themes for audio work.

BTW: Turn this hardware acceleration on again!

I've seen this behaviour too; it is most annoying. Although on my machine it went away....unconfigured laptops tend to have this problem

My XP machine did this too. Since your machine should be optimized for audio anyway, I would recommend going into your Control Panel, selecting System, click on the Advanced tab, and then click on the Performance button; finally, select the option for best performance (it will turn of XP's fancy graphics routines). XP is pretty, but why throw all that processor power at graphics when you're making music? By the way, there is a website called MusicXP.net that has loads of good, competent information on optimizing XP for music production.

We are sorry for this nerving problem.
If you dont want to wait for the next update or Live2.0 (we've fixed the problem now), disable the menue shades to get rid of the problem.

Here is a small description of how to do this :
- klick with the right mouse on your desktop and choose "Properties"
- go to the "Appearence" tab and press on the "Effects" button
- disable the "show menu shades" box

I have translated this from my german WinXp to english, so it might be a little bit different on your XP version ...
