edit: actually banjo MUSIC is music... I mean....I love banjo
I think all would-be beat manglers, song wranglers and half-baked scrib-scrabbling "producers" should all learn to play the fuckin banjo.
MORE BANJO!

The problem with music today is that it all needs more cowbell.
I hear a song and always think 'I cold use some more cowbell on that track'.
I'm telling you fellas.... you're gonna want that cowbell on the track.
I got a fever, and the only prescription........
.....is more cowbell.

stinky wrote:personally, i think this is bullshit... yeah, the man keeps you down, yadda yadda... but, we're living a world that's more connected than ever. There are so many ways to go around the norm and still access the masses in a way that was never ever possible in the history of our world. I think relegating yourself to a self effacing manner is exactly the contrary of the spirit of music. Every major music form created was born out of a desire to break from convention, and as musicians and artists, its our duty to continue this heritage. If you'd like to make the shit that requires you to pander to the powers that be, then you reap what sow, and complaining about it makes you just as pathetic as the people you slander...
man you so remind me of a dude i used to be friends with. LOVES to argue for the sake of arguing, and to hear his voice and to look like he is right all of the time. I agree with you in that we are more connected than ever. BUT, as opposed to the 90's and early part of this decade, things have become very very very very commercialized and the art and music scenes are completely OVERSATURATED, so attracting attention and standing out requires one usually to project a certain sound and more importantly, posture and appearance, attitude. All I am saying is that things seem less about making music now than participating in a high-school-like cool-contest. Maybe you've found yourself in a fortunate position where you love what you do and you are doing what you love. Great. I am happy for you. I personally have gone beyond the type of dissatisfaction that breeds ingenuity and have entered the realm of pure dissatisfaction. When I meet artists, I usually end up seeing an arrogant self-serving narcissist who doesn't give a fuck about anything except promoting their shit and making a name and or money. Reltionaships between "musicians" seem to be formed more on a basis of fashion sensibility and looks, status and number of friends on someone's myspace.
"I'll collaborate with you if you will help me blow up."
If you understand what I'm saying, then you understand the reason for my lamentation. If not, the I am happy for you since you aee obviously living your dream. I personally grow more and more disgusted with what I see as time goes by, and want to participate less.
the point of music is creating emotion through sound vibration, but it's boring when you are the only one listening. Like masturbation. Boring.
as far as making music goes, nowadays I seem to be doing it for myself, my girlfriend and my cat. Maybe it's because I suck...wait, lots of people that suck are playing their stuff everywhere. Maybe it's because I am real and don't suck dyck, and all the fake scenesters hate me because of it.

still you are surrounding yourself and embracing negativity in stead of doing the opposite.
to quote from above
[quote="
In other words, better to light a candle than curse the darkness. Innit?[/quote]
you choose to whine about it in stead of showing different then what you experience, and by that showing otherwise.
man; enough candles out there, just gotta know where to look.

That's what i do. I am a very negative person nowadays. Look around. I don't see too much to be positive about anymore. I am just embracing what I see and feel. When i am in a good mood, believe me, everyone knows it. I think i am going to sell all of my gear and spend a while in the woods somewhere, maybe go to some temples in S.E. Asia and meditate. It would probably do me a lot more good than sitting in front of a bunch of machines. Best i do that before I smash all of them, which i find myself having a strong urge to do lately.

This exact statement could describe you just as well.. by you're own admission, you're being negative. Go get laid, enjoy a nice ride in the country side, and remember what life is about... stopped being so fucking depressing.. life is what you make of it..err_eur wrote:man you so remind me of a dude i used to be friends with. not to get too philosohical on ya,but if you are up for it, it now seems a good time to read a book that helped me with a lot of negativ anger a long time back.
Some people hate it, but if you take it not to serious it has some interesting points of view which could give you some air to breath as it did with me.
It's new age, and it's pretty spiritual, but hey, in my opinion seriously pretty good readingstuff: Conversations with god
And then only the first book.
The title scared me too, but it has been one of the more enlighting books in my live, but that is also cauz I just take the parts out of it that I like, and I don't take it all too serious. In dutch we say: take it with a bit of salt.
Have a try man, you might be surprised
but stop spreading the negativity, you're helping the thing you dislike so much

oh jealousy.
if you don't find nothing worth of listening, maybe you're looking at the wrong places. or maybe you don't like music at all.
Im not talking bout nowadays hip bands. I'm an old fart. It's music and it's history man. The classics in every style, be Haydn, Robert Johnson, J5 or Aphex. If the classics don't give you goosebumps, drop the thing out.
If you're into making music, who gives a shit about what crap is selling and who is hipster and bla bla? When (if) you find your own voice, you wouldn't care.
i guess stinky has a point. never been easier to make different kinds of music. we never have so much possibilities in terms of equipment and textures. And music making is exploding aroud the world, everywhere.
Don't tell me something good is not coming out from this. It's like to say there's no other lifeform in the whole universe.
Just go dig your own hole or find something enthusiastic to do. I smoke pure pot and make my music

I love making music, my point is that it's getting me nowhere. I have been working like a dog and spending all of my money on music equipment. For what, to spend my life in an apartment with a bunch of computers and machines making sounds for my own ears? It is very difficult to get to play anywhere here because my stuff is too "abstract" and I don't conform to any style.
I have always felt that music is meant to be played in a live setting, not merely someone's apartment/house and recorded for people to listen to on their computer or MP3 player.
I do think a lot of my depression comes from living in the U.S.A., whose mall culture and myspace mentality i have grown to hate. I doubt Europe is much different anymore......I think what I am trying to say is I need to take a break from keeping (electronic) music and art as the center of my life and explore simply living, if you know what I mean. I need to hang out with people other than so-called "artists" and "musicians" and meet real, ordinary, everyday people, whose egos aren't inflated like watermelons. That's really it. And I need to get out of the city and spend a good while in nature somewhere, maybe start playing acoustic guitar again and maybe get a nice drum. Seriously. I am fed up especially with electronic music and musicians and all of the artificiality.
The techno scene used to be cool, but it blows now, and I think i am done with it, ditto rock/punk/indie......
BTW I read that book when i was a teenager, a girlfriend gave it to me to "help with my nihilistic attitude". It's a good book.
anyways this ends my rant, I know some of you know exactly what i am talking about here. The music scene is now too much of an industry; that term seems like such an oxymoron: "music industry" yet it is an every day accepted term everyone uses.....weird.
