Does Live 6 have a slicer/beat chopper?
I have used the demo of Live 5, but no slicer/beat chopper, so I didn't purchase it. Now comes Live 6, so did the company actually put in some effort to put in a slicer/chopper feature, or am I going to be let down once again?
FL Studio and Acid Pro both have Slicers and I have Acid 4, but am waiting to see if I should just upgrade to Acid 6 or purchase Ableton Live.
So what's the deal?

well you can select portions of a beat and then drag the audio file into impulse (lives drum machine) which will play back only the portion you selected. so there are work arounds for this. or you can use a cheap vst like phatmatik pro. both will get you where you want to go. or use recycle and chop up your sounds and then drop them into impulse like I think most people do.
so it's possible.
again.... get ready for a very long and winded debate... as soon as some of the other people on this forum see this thread there is going to be tons of b***ching...

Well i hope they do.... I don't understand how this isn't a part of the program. I mean, Live does seem very advanced, but.... c'mon, I don't know anyone who screws around with music and uses Acid or FL Studio that doesn't use and abuse the chopper/slicer. I just don't know why FL Studio wouldn't, I mean I thought they were trying to appeal to DJ's. It is probably my most commonly used tool. I just don't feel like screwing up my workflow by having to purchase add-ons and all that for a 500+ dollar product that can't even include a simple feature as that.
Seems like something EA would do with their videogames, be lazy and put off features for as long as they could so they can put a nice price tag on it.
Strange.....
Just unfortunate, as I wanted to move to Live, and can't afford all the expensive equipment, as I'm only a hobbyist, but I do enjoy working with Acid, I just figured something like Ableton would be able to surpass it, but it's missing some basic features.
Crazy stuff.
Anyways, I'm off to bed, appreciate the feedback though John.

Hey, um, between racks stacking impulses with beat repeats and macros, there are some fantastic new alternatiives that may have a serious bit of edge on the typicial competition.
The technology is new, but these new toys are carefully crafted tools that extend, in many ways, routing that goes beyond any other daw. These babies, when arranged correctly, and fully realized can not only mimic but transcend any of these other devices (especially if you take into cnsier the value of of ones own subjective take on these rather than a more randomized output.)
I can think off of the top of my head several work around that would produce results that were infinately better than beat repeat.
The bitch of it all is that we do still have to slice it. I don't know what to say about that. An option that could Identify transients and JUST slice them might not be too hard to code, as I am sure that they could recycle some of the code from their audio engine ut who the hell knows.
If you already have acid, and it slices, I would especially look into the current upgrade offer, get six with its REALLY impressive new tools and workflow, and just rewire, slice, and come back. Two apps are often better than one anyway.

I know fanboys will be fanboys, and they will whine and complain when someone criticizes their products, but this is BS.
If your going to defend Acid Pro not having a chopper, then obviously objectivity is not your forte.
I'm not trying to be mean, but if your going to defend Live on this topic, then your opinion is not wanted here from me, as I don't support fanboism on any stage, and I know Acid lacks in Audio quality, i never said it was the best thing since sliced bread, and I gave Live it's props, but it neds a chopper for me to work with it, and if I'm spending 500 bucks, I want my workflow to be as easy going as possible, as I'm sure all you SOB's that pirate software are having your nice old time, but I feel if I'm going to lay down 500+ for a product, I, and others should have their say, and I recently read that many have wanted a chopper since version 3, and it still isn't here, if your going to support a company that doesn't listen to it's customers, go ahead.... I can't solve stupidity, but I can point it out, and ableton is certainly not being smart about this.

Well. If you're going to be like that.....
They're cooking up a slicer. It just wont be for Live 6. As they cooked up hundreds of other improvements and features for now.
You say you'll unfortunatly have to use acid..
If you didn't like Live, then it wouldn't have been unfortunate.
Use both, be nice and wait....

hey jmowry whats up with all the attitude dude, trust me when I say that I want a slicer more than you do, and it will come. In the meantime don't give yourself a headache half the folks don't know what a slicer is and think it's some kind of beat repeat/suppatrigga effect and the other half are just difficult.
the point is ableton said they were going to implement something and with-out a doubt it's going to be worth the wait, I absolutely Love this companys design schemes. the slicer is my number one tool of use and my number one combo tool of use in conjunction with other tools so i understand where you are coming from entirely.
I will say that the features of live 6 are worth more than your/and my weight in gold so don't I repeat do not sleep on getting Live 6.
in the meantime you should check out liveslice to go along with Live, it's a great slicer and probably the most seamless third party choice. its very very good, and very very reasonably priced. I know you don't want to spend more
money but for folks like us you can never have enough sample slicers
peace

Damn B. I wasn't whining, myself. I was just particularly talkative and optimistic about live yesterday, because I realized, by accident, several things, as a drummer that make the live interface so much more useful to me than a tool that spits out subjective data.JMowery wrote:I know fanboys will be fanboys, and they will whine and complain when someone criticizes their products, but this is BS.

And, although live does not have that sort of tool, which I most certainly would LOVE to have, seeing as though I have about a week of recorded drums that I haven't properly dealt with yet, I was eager to share that although I have not yet been satisfied with rumoured Sampler based beat generators (I have not gotten around to Sampler much yet- one thing at a time) I have myself found some very uesful, interactively dynamic workflows for generating some rather glitchy to no too glitchy, interfacable uniqueness-generators.
With regards to the fanboyism: I wouldn't say I'm a complete fanboy. Lack of dual processor support and bugs in five definately put me way off that track, but I am prettty much flabbergasted that MANY of my user requests HAVE BEEN adressed, dude.
Which Beat Slicer Should I Get?....
Does any beat slicer program out there integrate with Live's workflow better than the other?...I am just getting ready to buy Recycle because I already have Reason and love that program.

if you use reason, recycle will make you love dr rex players. if i could use dr rex inside of live (without rewiring reason in) id be all over it.
if you use live without reason phatmatik pro is the way to go. its like recycle and a dr. rex player that works right inside of live.
