Slang: An International Survey

Post by kramerica » Mon Aug 14, 2006 7:35 pm

In light of another recent thread wherein I learned that "class" means "sweet" or "cool", I'd like to learn of some other non-american or at least non-chicagoan slang words that you guys use. Especially you brits, scots, and aussies.

Some overused terms used in my circles would be:

"brah" as in "bro" or "broham" or "broseph" or "man" (e.g. Hey brah, hit this shit).

"rage" as in "get down" (e.g. I raged at that show last night)

"chop" as in "douchebag" (e.g. your a f'ing chop, brah).

"ranch" as in "dump" (e.g. this place is a ranch).

"tits" = good or "class" as I just learned

"balls" = bad or crap

I know that when someone rocks my face off, we often say "melted" in various combinations. (e.g. Underworld will melt your fucking face).

...trying to think of some more. Will update as brain work better.

Anyone?

"Grime" (the weak rap style)? I like some of it, but most of it is garbage. Tis a shame too, b/c I really dig d&b and 2-step.

Gash is pretty gross it it's intended to imply what I mean. I guess that's not much different than how mainstream gangsta rappers refer to women here in the US.

Oh...I DO! I actually work as an attorney in an immigration law office here in the US. Our entire client base is Eastern European and we have 5 translators (Serb, Russian, Bulgarian, Lithuanian, Romanian), so I've heard "sooka".

Interestingly, "pederass" is an alternative for "pedophile" in the US (meaning, 'an adult who is sexually attracted to minors'...gross).

That's "Pederast"

the ped part relates to children, erastes relates to 'lover of' in the sexual sense , where 'philia' is more of an 'extreme interest in', like 'Bibliophilia' is a extreme interest in books. Greek innit.
anyway, IMO pederast is more accurate.

Anyway - enough of the DJ pastimes. ;)

My favourite english slang word is "Skive",
Skive is British slang for avoiding work by staying away or leaving early; it's often heard in the form skive off.

it has a distinctly germanic/scandinavian sound so perhaps it comes from there. I would imagine it has made its way to the states by now. If not - it should do.

anyway .. if you interested in etymology

I'm Canadian living in Aus right now, and these guys use the word cunt for everything under the sun. It can mean good, bad, or indifferent as I will explain in the following examples:

1. My best friend, I love that cunt.

2. That guy is such a cunt.

3. Hey cunty, howsitgoin?!

you're thinking grime.

and someone on the dubstep forums the other day asked why there wasn't more "gash" on the boards, and i told him that perhaps calling women "gash" was the reason.

ugh.

When someone says "It's the dogs bollox" or "It's the mutts nuts" it means that something is great. I'm from Ireland btw. :D
