Editing tone

Post by jduffy56 » Tue Aug 15, 2006 3:10 pm

I've just started using Ableton Live, basically to record solo jazz guitar pieces on my computer hard drive. The recorded sound I am getting so far is muddy. What is the easiest way to mix and edit a recording to achieve a very clear guitar sound.? Thanks very much

Jduff,

The key is to get it sounding good on the way in. Use an audio interface that allows you to plug a mic into the computer with an XLR connection. Then is is all about mic placement. Play with the mic in different parts of the room until it sounds best.

With a recording that sounds muddy once it is in the machine... well... at that point you're wanting to take out some of the salt from a cooked ham. Fiddle with EQs, mess with Saturator, splash on a bit of reverb... but what you really want to do is get the band back in the room and start fresh.

Muddy tone

Thanks for your reply. I am using a Line 6 TonePort UX2 and recording directly to the computer without a mike. Do you think my results would improve by using a microphone going into the TonePort? Last question. What kind of microphone should I buy? Thanks again
