Are warp markers best in Live 3? Is it a pain in the arse?

Hello all.

I don't own live, but am looking at something to play my arrangements live along with another dj playing vinyl.

Those that have replied, could I use Live, or in combination with Traktor to do this?

What is the equivalent of nudging the vinyl to get the tune in time?

I run one of the outputs on my soundcard into a small numark mixer, and the master output on that goes across the room to a pioneer mixer and my turntables.
I generally use the tap function when attempting to match to a record but it is tricky to get it just right. I have not put a lot of time into this, but in my experience it is tough to keep Live matched with my turntables - not impossible but definately tough. Maybe it's because I'm not used to it? I imagine with practice it becomes easier. Perhaps someone else has experience with this?

I can definately tell you it would be much much easier if you worked the opposite way and used Live as your "master" having the dj keep his records matched with your Live output, rather than you trying to stay synced with him. The creative possibilities, with practice, would be quite overwhelming.

No, they are very easy to work with, especially when it comes to beat driven music.

I have messed around with live for djing and it can work well but you have to make sure your warp markers are set up correctly throughout the track. IMO Live should have a Clip Push and Pull function to make cueing and beatmatching quicker (even if this only works in repitch mode not timestretched). A master tempo Push and Pull would also be useful to beatmatch to external turntables (tap tempo isnt precise enough - it gives an approximation but it still needs further adjustment).

Where can I find dj wildstyles forum?

A earlier post mentioned succesfull sync of traktor and live, my earliest experiments yielded less than perfect results. Has anyone been able to get it to work?

Perhaps we can code something to hijack the OSC code into live?

Wildstyle is the son of a circus side show freak and has no forum of his own, none of which I know. Perhaps do a search for wildstyle, or ass, or any other similar keyword.

Live can never truly be a true DJ tool until it incorporates MP3 compatibility. My 10,000+ song collection is entirely in MP3 [who has enough hard drive space for 10,000 .wav files?!?].

I use it for multitrack recording, and for some live performance integration with the band. I drop a few loops and samples in [usually an actual sample from the song we're about to play-we do all covers], let my drummer match the tempo, bring in the other instruments, and start performing. Using Live to bring in one or two samples that we can't recreate live can really make the difference in a song.

yeah if live truly wants to be a serious digital dj tool, it has to have mp3 support. if it doesn't it's like having a technics that only plays at 37.5 rpm. it's going against the grain, cos songs just don't come in wav format. and as a collection owner of 12,000 tunes i simply am not going to consider using it. [even tho it does look truly beautiful]

Although it can be used as a dj tool, I do not think that live aims to be a serious dj tool at all. It is a loop based live performance tool and an entirely different beast. And it is beautiful indeed!

If you are looking for a serious, dedicated dj tool you should look into traktor. I've been using that for djing and it rocks.

I think it would not be too hard for Ableton to come up with a awesome Dj program.

I do think it could be huge idea, as Live has such a good name for sound and stability and over all user freindly interface.
However, I do respect the fact though that Ableton takes their time and concentrates on 1 awesome program: Live, rather than their Native neighbors, who put out dozens of instruments that are less user friendly or as stabile.

Mp3 import would be awesome, but as of now would use much more CPU..
Until more optimization (Altivec G4 / XP) , I do not see this working well for Live.

ewww - no mp3 support in ableton please. traktor exists for that - i would not like the introduction of anything that could lead to any instablility in ableton - and i'm sure realtime decompressing of mp3s could well lead to that.

and also - mp3s have a reputation for being less than the highest quality - a rough and ready medium...

just buy a bigger harddrive lol

Perhaps Ableton could work directly with DJ Mildstyle and create a "virtual DJ" program with the DJ modeled after Mildstyle himself. They could make it like a video game...make Mild cut and scratch...make Mild hit on clubgirl...make Mild hi-five imaginary friends...make Mild type cryptic posts.
