Dj SHADOW FANS new album opinions??
Alot of people are talking about his new album being shit because it features rappers, e40, keak tha sneak, and a bunch of other really crappy people. I've only heard one song and that was enough im afraid to listen to anymore of it. The single is called three freaks and its one of the worst songs ive ever heard in my life. I feel kind of disapointed, I considered him one of my favorite musicians. Anyone heard the album what do you think.?
By the way i fucking hate comercial hiphop or pretty much anything on the radio. I have been listening to what i consider "real" hip hop since i was fetus. Examples include: Krs one, percee p, big daddy kane, def jux in general, typical cats. So shit like lil jon or nelly just pisses me off.

From what I've heard of it so far, it's very disappointing. But I think that producing something as complex and detailed as "endtroducing" just drained his energies - understandably so perhaps but it took him 6 years to release a follow-up which itself was nowhere near as good. And now, another 4 years on, this.
On his website he's saying that people shouldn't expect him to just make the same thing all the time and he needs to move on. Of course that's true and maybe there are those who will think this new stuff is great but for me anyway it's like he's gone from having a sound that was unique and personal to sounding like loads of other people.
I hope that at some point Shadow will be able to get back in touch with the kind of inspiration that created "Endtroducing". But if not, well that's such an amazing album that I guess it's enough just to have made it at all.

He obviously doesn't have the "scaling up" skill. It's common.
Entroducing was a great album, and I think he did the whole thing on an mpc60.
When you get a success everyones says:
"that was great - now you can scale up - get a full-on studio upgrade from that 60, get a few racks of gear, get some session players in to handle those crunchier samples or the ones we can't clear". Not only that - you change, you aren't the spotty loner happy to spend umpteen billion hours in your bedroom with old vinyl, you are a global star with a hot supermodel girlfriend .. etc. (just my experience
)
that's where the problems start, "recreate a crunchy old sample with session players and a decent signal path". Heloooo!
I think Amon Tobin managed it OK on that video game soundtrack, but in general getting a bedroom samplist full of 'scaling up' ideas is a recipe for disaster.

I've head it and I think its cool.
Yes it's not Endtroducing or the Private press but hey the guys experimenting you know! just like when he produced his first album.
Before Endtroducing there was no point of reference for his work and nothing to compare it to. Now he has a new album that doesn't sound like the first 2 and people hate it!!! (see the djshadow forum on his website).
I have to admit that some of the tracks on the new album are not really my thing but I respect the guy for not making another Endtroducing and for taking a risk with his fan base.
I managed to have a chat with him about it a few months ago at Island Records in London and he said he knew that some of his fans would be pissed off but that hopefully more new fans would come of it.
Fair play I say. Do what you fucking like Shadow and enjoy the freedom that selling loads of records brings you.
If you just want to listen to Endtroducing you can get it from HMV for a fiver!!

I had no idea he had some new stuff out...
I went to his website to listen... Now normally I wouldn't judge something after one listen - but I know that i'm never going to like this.
I know an artist can't release the same stuff forever but this is such a massive departure from his pervious stuff it's like a different person.

I'm sure he himself said in an interview not that long ago (sorry, can't find the link) that his philosophy was to change up his style as he progressed, but not make such a radical departure that the new stuff bore little relation to what had gone before. Having heard the new LP, his own personality is submerged and barely recognisable. IMO he's dumbed his sound down - Endtroducing and Private Press were cleverly and interestingly arranged but this one just sounds a bit generic and directionless to me. The beat he did for Cage's album was great, I was hoping the album would be more on those lines. Maybe it'll grow on me....
Incidentally he became a father in between the last album and this, and I know from experience that parenthood can mush your brain up a bit.

from everything i have read the album as a whole isn't anymore like 3 freaks than it is like endtroducing. it is very varied. rock songs that hold up as rock songs, rap songs that hold up as rap songs. not rock over hiphop like some of the unkle stuff.
i've been a fan since like 94, actually longer than that. i remember the paris album he worked on way back in the day. i look forward to hearing the album as a whole when it comes out. im not searching out leaks. i havent even listened to 3 freaks yet because of all the backlash. i respect him enough as an artist to wait and listen to the album as a whole. i could pick at least 1 song off of every album he has released, that if i had only heard that 1 song, i wouldnt have liked his stuff.
also, to all the people not liking his "new direction" he has always produced stuff for people to rap over. for almost 15 years. look at a real discography, probably half of his tracks over the years have been non-instrumentals.
i also would not be suprised to see him drop an instrumental version of the new album at some point.

I think its interesting that folks hear one song and dismiss the entire album. I like Endtroducing, Unkle, and Private Press and they were all different. I remember when Kid A came out and I HATED it. Then I listened to it again. Now its one of my enduring favorites. Same thing with Aenema...
Sheesh, folks. Give the man a bit of respect. Hear the whole thing before you give up on him.
For the record, I like the new track, but not anywhere near as much as his worst off Private Press. He wanted to make a party record. I can appreciate that. I like parties.

I was in a store, saw The Outsider on vinyl in the shelves. I took it, went to the cassier and paid for it. I went home, laid that piece of wax on my tts and grabbed my headphones! I was blown away by the shitty music Shadow sold me. Album sucks! Im not closed minded in any way. I appreciate all kind of music but stuff is wack. It seems to me he didnt make any effort to make The Outsider. I like the second track a little bit but it gets pretty boring after 4 runs. I can dig that surf rock track as well but its far from finished.. I dont care if Shadow went into another direction. To each its own.. He can do hyphy, rock, trance.. I dont care.. As long as its good.ejectorset wrote:and how exactly did you buy it when it doesn't come out til september?ikke wrote:the album blows.. all of it. its a real disappointment![]()

Everyone has its own opinion. And it seems that a lot of folks are sharing mine. Go google some reviews on the outsider. go to djshadow.com and enter the forums. The Otsider has the most negative reviews Ive ever read.
I agree... Its pretty boring to be a bedroom samplist. Going through a stack of records, finding the right samples .. I hate it! But why doesnt he get a guitar, a bass gtr, an acoustic drumkit, percussion, a rhodes and other isntruments and play with them instead of buying a complete pro tools rig and invite musicians to do the work for him?? If he did everything himself (except for the vocals) the album would have more soul. Its pretty soulless as it is. The Outsider sounds like a demo album a few guys made in a few weeksAngstrom wrote:He obviously doesn't have the "scaling up" skill. It's common.

Also, The Outsider sounds like something Ive all heared before..
