macbook 1gyg ram terribly poor performance

Post by bobaphat » Sun Aug 20, 2006 3:47 pm

I recently bought myself a macbook with 1gyg ram, and Ableton is the only software i use right now.

When i run the the demo songs,, my laptop just freezes half way in the song. My macbook cant even play the demo song in Live5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is this normal? I know ableton 5 is not dual core supportive but this is just terrible.

Hello,

I guess you are using an older version of Live: Live 5.2 introdiced Universal Binary support, see here for details:

Kind regards,

and you are using 5.2 I assume, as is documented absolutely everywhere 5.2 on a macbook pro will give very good speed.

less than 5.2 won't.

but I'm sure you checked that obvious step out .. so I'm not sure what your problem is.

-- aha, I see Amo beat me to it.

i already got 5.2

I want to narrow down all possible problems, im afraid that there is something wrong with my macbook. Does macbook also run with rosetta on dual core processors???

have you compared your performance to that of similar machines using the live 5 performance test?

obviously MBP results are toward the end of that monster thread.

There are 2 versions of 5.2, a PowerPC version and a Universal version - crtl-click on the app, get the info on the app and see if it says Kind: Application (Universal) under the general section. If it says Kind: Application (PowerPC) you're not running the Universal Binary version.

Did you really make sure you have the Universal Binary version of Live 5.2? I'd check that before you make any other decisions, dude.

No -- I have a macbook with only 512MB ram as of yet and I can play the demo songs just fine (though there is the occasional CPU spike). In fact, I'm pretty sure they more or less worked on a G3; I know I played around with them before I got my macbook and don't remember having any major problems (maybe one or two wouldn't work). So you have something seriously wrong or you don't have the UB version.
