Here happens with 5.2.1, when I have SampleTank in the project chance of a crash is very high especially when recording @ 4th track or so, here it comes the crash, otherwise Live with its own instruments only (Simpler Impulse & Operator - demo mode I do not own it) seems to be solid. 5.2 seemed less prone to crash it only happened in specific circumstances but less often even if I am not able to reproduce it at will.
However SampleTank works fine in Cubase and Fruity Loops.
I really think Live's the problem, but it seems no one care fixing it (see my previous posts) I had no luck with Ik Multimedia support. Hopefully Live 6 will fix it.

Add me to the list of SampleTank 2 XL users that experience crashes. Happens every time I really get into a song. I lay down an audio clip from Drums On Demand, fire up some guitar licks with Virtual Guitarist 2, and lay down a piano with SampleTank 2XL. I'm not talking about a complete song here, just about 12 measures or so. Give it ten minutes of working fine and then boom! Live 5 crashes and I have to restart my computer to release Live 5's hooks in the system. Like others, I first experience no midi response from SampleTank, and then I get the serious error message from Live.

This is with Live 5.2.1 and SampleTank 2.1. I just spent $400.00 on SampleTank2 XL yesterday and this happens. What a mess. I can't afford junk like this. If I could take SampleTank back, I would. I should have bought Kontakt instead.

Ableton? You want to buy me Kontakt since this appears to be an issue with Live and I can't return SampleTank? Hm... didn't think so.

The same happens here. If I remove SampleTank (I got LE that comes with Omnisynth Expansion Tank, just a srtipped down version of XL) from the project everything is fine.
When using 5.0.3 was happening in the same way but not so often. 5.2 was happening when I quit using the Set. At the time of closing Live crashed but it did not hook into the system. This happened 40% of the time and if you saved often no harm to your sets. Then came 5.2.1, a disaster. From day 1 of 5.2.1 I experienced the same problems that you describe. I have written to support just 6 days ago. No answer so far. I send them my crash log. Pls do the same. I have tryed with 5.2 (I had not unistalled it yet) but now even 5.2 seems broken like 5.2.1 and I haven't change a thing in my setup.

I have contacted IK Multimedia as well they say that it's Live issue, listing all the DAWs that can use SampleTank with no issues.

What can I say? I like Live as a concept but I really would like to use my favourite VSTi with it. SampleTank sounds amazing and it's easier than many others.
You're right: 400$ and still no sounds. Ableton is not doing right this time, probably they touched 5.2.1 in some way. They should fix it. If Live 6 is an evolution of 5.2 we should expect the problems to be there again.
Generally it seems Ableton cares only for players like NI, Steinberg, Reason and Wave but even with those there are problems. In the Sticky VSTi Status on this very forum IK Multimedia is not even mentioned. Maybe they do not think it's important. Maybe IK Multimedia has a too low market share to be considered.
Well in that case they should say it clearly. It's called Fair Play.

I think an external module (hardware) never breaks. This VSTi sucks no matter the platform. Sometimes I wonder if all this VSTi stuff makes sense. I'm very, very sad, a lot of money wasted. :?

How Kontact compares to ST?

Sonic Synth 1 has an older engine with less MIDI mappings. This makes me even more sad. :(
Thanks for the post anyway.

I would just like to add that the exact problems that people describe also happen to me. Why isn't this problem addressed by Ableton?

If you look at my pasts posts you can read my story with that. I opened a support request and the outcome was that they were not able to reproduce the problem on their machine with the same frequency I was observing.
It's kinda random so isn't adressable. It was 5.0.3, then came 5.2 (slightly better) then 5.2.1. here it come again it seems 'The Freeze Festival' to me.
Have you opened a support request? Complaints on the forums are good so everybody knows and makes the community aware, but direct support request is the way to go, maybe posting in parallel here.

my 2 cents.

News from Ableton Support

Post by Pasha » Thu Aug 24, 2006 7:16 am

I had some news in my mail box from support (kind as always):

It Seems Live 5.2.1 has some Graphic problems with SampleTank
This is support suggestion in the meantime they work on a solution :
I would recommend to disable "Auto Hide Plug-ins" in the
Live Preferences. Whenever you insert the same VST plug-in twice in a
Live Set, you need to close the graphic window of the first plug-in
before opening the second window.
Hope it helps, I'll try and post results, pls you all do the same.

I'll try it, but I don't think this is the solution. I have had Live 5 crash every time with only 1 instance of SampleTank 2 running. And each time it has crashed, SampleTank 2's window was not open.

Well... I stand corrected. This solution has fixed the issue! Interesting. It didn't seem to change the program operation either, at least for me.

The same here. I have to admit that the Program (Sampletank) still has some issues but now it crashes less often. Is now clear that Abes know what doesn't work. Hopefully they will fix it.
What you mean by program operation?
Are you on Windows?

I mean that Live and SampleTank both continue to work the way I was already learning how to use them. In other words, I haven't had to change the way I do things because of this fix offered by Ableton.

I used KOntakt 1.5.3 before Sampletank 2 so I came back.

No, Abes didn't anything...
