What's your favorite controller ?

Post by monosite » Fri Jan 30, 2004 5:22 am

I have the uc33 from evolution.
it has plenty of knobs and enough fader to be happy.

Dark side is no midi clock, the usual 100% plastic crap (don't expect to do any hard crossfading) and it's a bit too small and compact to really feel comfortable with it.
In addtion the manual that goes with it is quite cryptic.

Anyone using Roland SI24, Tascam FW1884 or something else to tell us about it ?

I love my microKontrol

Post by bitmap » Fri Jan 30, 2004 6:07 am

Hello,
I love the microKontrol! it's got 8 endless knobs,8 faders, 16 MPC style pads, a XY joystick w/ a button... plus a keyboard. I use the knobs and faders to control Live's mixer, the pads to do drum programing and tap tempo. And the keyboard to play VSTi's from Bidule into Live. the MicroKontrol can be battery, USB, or AC powered.

Bitmap,

Are those pads comfortable for druminput .. haven't seen the MicroKontrol for real , but I just feared they were a little tiny ?

. hi......I have aremote 25....lot of knobs , the keys feel very strong , but its alittle bit hard to program since doesnt have an edit computer program . also novation promissed new templates and editor....THEY NEVER DID...... :x .
I've seen the evolution uc-33 and mikrocontrol . I dont like them both . the uc-33 looks and feels like a toy , it's faders are not mothorized, so everytimte you open a new project u have to adjust them . the mikrocontrol has one of the worse key layout , they are so small and feel cheap , although I like the pads style mpc , but its heavy to carry around , the keys suck .
I wish I ould find the perfect midi controler , I got something recently called shuttle pro , its soo cool , I use it mainly for logic and ROCKS , I'm going to try it this week with live . shuttle pro its more suitable for the editing process , it makes scrolling , fastforward, rewind , zooming much more easier than the fcking mousse . and the best is than you can customize each btm . www.contourdesign.com

i've been using it on a powerbook 550 g4 with 10.3.2. the only thing the ozone lacks which would be really cool is a software program to reassign the parameters the knobs use.

as it is you have to change these through the computer. In Live this doesn't really matter because Live easily learns whatever they are set to, but if you want it configured to work with particular settings in reason then it's an issue..

This is what is making me lean toward definitely getting an MXF8 I think. I had the pleasure of owning a Notron until two years back when I stupidly sold it and have regretted it ever since, a totally unique controller. It allowed me to do so much more than I can with "more sliders and knobs" and "configurability" that all of the plastic pieces of crap I have owned ever since have offered. Before they fell apart that is.

There's a new breed of Notron called Genotron coming out from the same guys making the MXF8 so that is DEFINITELY on the list. Having got some more info the MXF8 isn't just another boring ass controller, it looks in a completely different ballpark to me though I am still not completely sure what the ratio sequencer is all about. Being able to crossfade up to 8 channels of volume (as opposed to the fader just being assigned as a controller) along with punches, kill, midi clock, sequencer stop/start, rythmic gating, soloing, tempo control, 56 midi cc's along with the Quantorum update (based on the coming Genotron) it looks in a whole different league than anything else on offer to me. And it looks like it's built like a tank to boot!

This one looks very well thought out to me and is based on an excellent pedigree. It appears as much an instruments as it does a "midi controller box" which is exactly what the Notron was. It had a very analog feel in working with it. You stumble across ways of using it that you would never dream of thinking about in a daw based sequencer, any Notron user will tell you the same and just fold their arms when they got the obligatory "bullshit" answer.

So, who has an MXF8 then and want's to spill the beans on what exactly the ratio sequencer does? I think I'm sold without knowing though to be truthful, I am NOT investing in another boring plastic piece of junk that just sends out cc's for it's living period! A bit more innovation and use of those switches and knobs for chrissakes!

I'm quite fond of the idea behind Novation's most recent "Remote Audio". Basically, it's the same Remote 25 that's been around for a while, with an audio interface (a la Ozone), PLUS ---> it's now also a K-Station, not to mention it's a pretty well designed piece of kit, tons of knobs and faders, very sleek. Might have to check that one out, although I'm also intrigued by MicroControl's mini drum pads, but I do hate the feel of those keys.

Doepfer's Pocket Dial is a nice alternative, less expensive, perhaps easier to manage because it is smaller. With four banks you get 16 dials x 4 = 64 virtual dials.
