BerkleeMusic.com To Teach Ableton Live
Yep, you read that right folks - I just found out about it yesterday and it was confirmed by a Berklee Music Media rep. I plan to be in their first course.
http://www.berkleemusic.com/index
BerkleeMusic.com will be teaching an "online" course on using Ableton Live
starting around late spring/early summer of 2004! The class will be approximately 12 weeks long, Instructor-led and taught completely from the BerkleeMusic.com site. As long as you have a decent connection to the 'net and can pay for the class, regardless of where you're physically located, you can take their online courses.
The Live course (and their current online courses) is Instructor-led and not something you sign up for and run with it all by yourself. You also have assignments & projects just like you would in a regular class, and you'll get to meet your classmates online too.
Personally, I think this is awesome & wished it was being taught sooner. I especially wished they would teach people how to DJ with it with Live. Who knows, if those of you who want such a course would email them stressing the desire for this, they may put such a course in place! I've already asked them to consider this.
If you look at their current online courses, you'll see that for the music production courses, you get a copy of the software you're taught on that runs the length of the course (i.e., Reason and Logic). I say that to say, they will probably do the same with Live by providing each student with a copy of Live for course use only.
Furthermore, you earn CEU (Continuing Education Units) for any online courses you successfully complete, you'll get a Course Completion Certificate and your CEUs will be registered with the American Council on Education (ACE).
If your company offers tuition reimbursement, you can pay for your course that way, along with other forms of payments.
Check this all out yourself on their site for more details. Because the Live course is still being prepared, you probably won't see details about it right now.
However, feel free to email or call them and ask about it because it is LEGIT and they want to know who's interested.
Thanks!

hi! I studied on berklee music.com . I took a class for protools 6 . they made me buy a book for this class which was 35 bucks....the course itself was 800!!!!
. I thought it 'd be the kind of course when they show lot of videos on line and you read the book just alittle to enforce what you learned ....but NO!!!!! . THE COURSE WAS ENTERILY BASED ON THE BOOK!!! . everytime i was taking one of this lessons (once a week for 12 weeks) I felt being part of a fraud . you have to read endless pages , there is almost no movie at all , and you only get to talk to the teacher once aweek on a stupid and bad designed chat room .
my advise.......dont spend any money on this course just because it has the name of berklee on it . get some video or books or read tuorials for live .

Hi Zebastian,
Thanks for posting about your class experience on BerkleeMusic.com. Sorry to hear it sucked! Since I've never taken any online class, it seemed like a really great option. I just know that I want instruction on Live from someone experienced, whether online or local to me (NC).
Do you feel like you learned anything from the class you took?
If so, what most made you feel like you learned something?
Was the instructor knowledgeable and how were his teaching skills?

I cant say the teacher is good since the entire course is based on a book that the teacher wrote . each week they post a new lesson for you to learn....but the thing is that the lesson is almost exactly as the book...same words....same context...everything , they just add some more pages with bulshits . I was taking protools and I'm a electronic musician.....the course was totally focused on folks who play guitars, drums , sing..........very little of virtual instruments...
I think I learned very little....I got more from the book .
that's so funny,
Can't you read the manuals by yourself at home?
i did this way with protools and live and those kind of appliccations
it's not like you are learning c code
or wait i have an idea: you can give me the 800 and i come over to show you, it would pay my flight and food, hum i need holidays, my favourite day the icecream day...weather must be nice in berkeley...

Tuition
I seriously want to learn how to use Ableton as a DJ. I've come striaght from Technics 1210's because I'vve seen the future, but am eager as a beaver on speed. Please help!
PS I have no Mac or music production experience!

Total novice in the field of musical software. My ambition is to become sufficiently competent to play Live as a DJ within 12 month. Realistic?
My advice would be to not go on a course unless you have the spare cash and really really feel you need the guidance. Live is pretty easy to pick up compared to other daws. having been a user of cubase for a couple of years before Live I understand the difference between a daw which is tricky to learn and one which is pretty easy. The manual should be enough to get up and running and i'd only bother to shell out the cash on another book if you feel the manual is not explaining it right for you. Just spend your cash on Live. How will you feel after a few months of attending a course for $xxx when you could of had a great audio interface alongside Live instead? Besides, if you get stuck with anything you just ask some of the dudes here on this forum and I'm sure they will be more than willing to offer assistance.
have fun!
