leftism is a classic, i think R&S was really underrated. afrika shox & phatt planet class.
no mention of portishead - dummy, massive attack - mezzanine, prodigy - fat of the land yet.
personally:
im still listening to hybrid - morning sci fi, excellent album thats a real grower. same with [hate to say it here] sasha - airdrawndagger, not a classic but a good effort.

it was a close call, but i think thats the album when they came of age
i was going to say experience, for the memories of listening to it before going out raving in the uk.

I wonder if the reason why there isn't a new Leftfield or a new Underworld is that these peeps emerged before the tightly-compacted genre/pigeon holing thing came along that basically led to a kind of close-mindedness that meant you didn't venture outside of your 'genre'.
Ofcourse not everyone uses generalisations (genres) to define their music tastes, but magazines and a lot of the media totally rely on it.
If Orbital came out now, would they just be thought of as a breaksy outfit who could do it live, or would they transcend the genres and just be seen as top notch electronic musicians and rise to where they are now?
If Leftfield came along now would they just be pigeon-holed as a techno outfit with some dub tendencies, and never be given the chance to show they metal.
Of course both these lot showed that electronic music could rock-it live, and maybe if you can move people in a live context you will always get noticed.
For me it didn't get much bettter than:
Orbital at Glastonbury late 90's (Doctor Who theme through the haze)
and
Underworld on the Pyramid stage then a Raul Duke curvy leg sprint to the Other Stage for Leftfield both Glastonbury on the same night (possible lates 90's? or 2000)

i tend to see orbital and leftfield as dance music for people who dont like dance music
leftism was the ultimate coffee table album (along with the woeful screamadelica)
true story...
my mate drove up from manchester in 2000 to T In The Park
we'd been camping for several days and had ingested many chemikals
it pissed with rain all weekend
i turned 30 at midnight on the sunday
all my mates were in tents moaning about the weather
my mate from manc was with a couple of guys getting ready to drive back to manc land for work on the monday (he didn't make it)
so he wished me a happy birthday as did the other two who i didnt know - much hugs and back slapping
turns out it was leftfield
they knew my mate as he'd sold them a lot of studio equipment and met up with him after they had headlined the 'slum' tent
i was none the wiser
i still don't like their music
seen orbital many times - same set, same lights, same sounds
they should have just come on, played chime and left it at that - i mean, the doctor who theme? fuck off

Driving cross-country with Orbital Diversions, 18 hours non stop.
Saw them in Boston in the early 90's and loved it.
Saw them a few years ago in Manhattan and was really disappointed-- they played their "greatest hits" live for about 1 hour, hopelessly out of tune and sloppy, and that was it. Yawn.

In a way you're right , but thanks to them , and 1 or 2 years later the first albims from prodigy , chemical brothers and daftpunk , my harddisk and cd collection is now filled with drum n bass , techno and breakbeat songs and mixtapes with only a couple of Pink Floyd tracks because they remind me of when I was I child.i tend to see orbital and leftfield as dance music for people who dont like dance music
The fact that those Albums came out just when I hit 16 , discovered extacy and became a regular pothead after 2 years of experimenting might have something to do with it too
