Help choosing a laptop

Post by surripere » Sun Aug 06, 2006 7:38 pm

Hey,
I need help choosing over a laptop and if anyone could give me the ins and outs of what to look for and whether i should really opt for mac over pc.
First and foremest I'm looking at the macbook but am worried that converting to mac will take too long with all the software I need to put on it.

How will the performances of these 2 compare

Toshiba A110-
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/ ... egory_oid=

and

HP DV5133EA
http://www.johnlewis.com/Computing/Comp ... oduct.aspx

I am a regular live user and have a budget of no more than around £1000.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,

Sam

not a big fan of HP, but for the xtra 100, you get 20gb more hd and 2 years extended warrantee instead of one.

I like toshiba though... these are both great machines for the price!!

do the extra research though, and make sure these models don't have shared video.. especially the HP with Intel graphics Media Accelerator 950... what's that? Shared video sux ass, and you'll be hatin it.

Can anyone else help, I read quite good things about Toshiba's on here so I'm strongly considering that one

I've had an HP lappie for something like a year and a half now, never had the slightest problem with it, running as strong as day one...
Turn up the radio. Turn up the tape machine. Look into the sunset up ahead. Roll the windows down for a better taste of the cool desert wind. Ah yes. This is what it's all about. Total control now.

I'd wait for the newer PC laptop types due shortly using newer CPUs.

By CPU what do you mean (i'm a rookie)... The toshiba there is new and uses a Core duo processor, so surely that should be good?
Thanks for help

Out of the two I think the HP at least looks better and has a better spec.

I'd personally go for a £900 macbook as the CPU on those two machines is a little weak (macbook is 2GHz, they are 1.66). I mean it will still run XP if you want.

Also if you can wait a couple of weeks the Core 2 Duo (or Centrino 2 Duo as it might be known too) will be available and will at least lower the price of the older Core chip based machines (at least on the PC side).

Hey,
Since I last posted, prices have dipped as everyone on here said!
Just looking to see what people think of this:

HP Pavilion Laptop, DV2058EA,

http://www.johnlewis.com/Computing/Comp ... oduct.aspx

Toshiba Satellite Laptop, A110-277,

http://www.johnlewis.com/Computing/Comp ... oduct.aspx

My real problem with selecting laptops, is knowing whats most important - RAM, Processor, Mac/PC?

Ahh! Help. Atm I think that HP looks amazing value

I recently (3 months back) got a toshiba A100 - because the toshies are meant to be good for audio.

So far, I have failed to get audio up and running with no glitches. Have tried a presonus firebox and emu 1616 interface. Both perform worse (in terms of pops/glitches) than my good old soundblaster live on my desktop.

So I'm wondering if, as this is one of toshiba's cheapest products to date, maybe the components aren't quite up to their usual reputation. Which may give rise to audio problems.

Your mileage may vary, etc.

I have used a PC forever. If you are new to computing, however, you may well be better off with one of the mac offerings.

Neither one of these indicates the HD speed. The HPs I've seen only come with 5400rpm.
