This thread has got some great lines...it's the Ableton Stand Up comedy night!
I'm to the point where I just plain don't talk to those people when I go in there, if I don't know exactly what I want then I research online before I ever walk into guitar center. so I can just say "go get me the ****" and they run off and come back with it and all the sudden they are calling me "sir"
the sir thing kinda pisses me off too. the second I let on that I'm gonna pay for something my name becomes "sir"
f***ing douche bags.
I'm a Reason user, and a very happy one. I also use Live (although, sadly, not as much as Reason).
As much as I like Reason, what those GC salesmen are doing is pretty unprofessional. I mean, sure, it IS their job to sell stuff, but once you say you're not interested they ought to back off. They certainly should not make you feel stupid for not using Reason.
Reason is perfect for some people, not for others. Same can be said for Reaktor, Live, Project 5, Acid, Fruityloops, Sonar, Logic, etc., etc., etc. We all find what works for us and use those, and it doesn't matter if what you use and what I use aren't the same tools.
Because it isn't ABOUT the tools. It's about the music you make with the tools. The GC salesmen ought to know that.

One method for dealing with salesmen that try to shove a product they don't even have a clue about is to just flat out slam their asses down about it like you are saying here. When they say they don't know explain that you do, if they lie tell them they are lying. After a few people like you make them feel small, they might stop lying.
I used Reason and Logic for a few years, but I got sick of Rewire, and though I like the sample based stuff in reason, two fairly thin sounding synths just doesn't cut it for me.
After getting Komplete 2 from Native Instruments I really haven't touched Reason. I should sell it.
I'm a fucking soft synth whore, besides everything from NI, it's PPG Wave, Attack, Zebra 1 & 2, Filterscape, Symptohm Melohman, GURU, Pluggo, and a slew of freebie soft synths.
Another reason why I wish Ableton would concentrate on Live rather than adding synths and samplers. Between Logic's EXS24, Kontact, Reactor, and Reason's NNXT, I really am a little too deep in samplers. I'm going to stick with Kontact mainly.
Sorry didn't read the whole thread, but the Reason thing is annoying. Why do I hate Guitar Center (every one I've ever been into)? Not enough salespeople, and the ones who are there are ssllloooowwww.... "I just want to buy this magazine! (1/2 hour later) Why do you need my address?"
Really, though, what is the point, when I get a better price and better treatment through the major online retailers like Sweetwater, and some (American Musical Supply) let me break the payment into three pieces, without signing up for an intrest-heavy credit card? And no tax, and usually free shipping.

...Conversation continues - this guy actually took notes when he went to shows about what gear and software various producers / live PAs were using so that he wouldn't suggest bullshit to them... Recorded what types of music they made, and actually had some constructive criticism on occasion...
Frasier: "Yeah, I dug that electro track. Were you trying to emulate an 808?"
Me: "No, I just liked the drumkit I found in the Redrum presets there, I'm not a real gear emulation purist..."
Frasier: "Oh, that's cool, cause an 808 can't modulate the volume like that, so I just thought I would mention it."
Me: "Oh, cool Frasier, thanks."
Frasier: "No worries. You need a smaller soundcard, right? Are you taking your Andromeda or your Roland out with you? I mean, how many inputs do you need? Cause the last I heard, you were using an external mixer, are you bringing things all into your computer?"
Me: "No man, I'm gonna go all software for the live show, so I only need outs. What about that thingy there?"
Frasier: "Piece of shit man, stay away. If you don't mind cocking with little teensie eigth inch cables, check out the Echo Audio cards. They're nice and portable. If you're really looking for something with XLR outs, then check out this new MOTU ultralight - I got here that you were using MOTU before, so it might be familiar to you."

Back at version 1, he was the guy who got me into Live. I originally was using loops in Cubase with Reason rewired in to play live. Frasier saw what I was doing on stage, and then when I went in for something else, said "hey, what you're trying to do with those two progs you could do way easier with Live, it's the newest thing..."
He never steered me wrong. I bought the Electrix Repeater on his advice, and loved it - cause he always knew what I was looking for, and wouldn't push shit on anybody.
He often got in shit for not selling to guys starting out who knew nothing about music tech. He got a lot of guys started on Reason and / or Live, and would often see kids who had previously bought Reason shopping for gear - Frasier would really find out why they wanted gear, and would steer people who couldn't afford it away from gear lust. I know one kid who went in looking for a "real synth" because he couldn't make the Subtractor sound how he wanted, so Frasier went and burned him a disk of his own personal .rns files so the kid could reverse engineer what he had done.
Frasier: "Don't go buying more gear until you've fully exploited what you have, you know? If you can't figure out how to program the subtractor properly, you won't be able to program a Virus B."
When I left that city, I really missed shopping for gear / software from Frasier, he was a top notch guy.
