Live won't recognize Trigger Finger/running Windows XP media

Here is my dillema. I just purchased a Toshiba Laptop installed with Windows XP Media Edition. I plan on using it primarily for Music applications and for school. However, I tried installing my USB powered M-Audio trigger finger & it wouldn't work. Live won't recognize it. I called M-Audio & their answer was they currently don't support windows XP media edition and don't know when they wil get it fixed. However, it does work in XP Home/Pro. So I thought, ok I have to install Windows XP home then. Does anybody else have this problem? If so, does anybody know of a work around, short of purchasing & installing Windows XP Home/Pro? There has to nbe something, right? That's stupid that it wouldn't work as it is still considered Windows XP. I'm pulling my hair out. Nobody has been able to help me thus far...

I have a Dell XPS 2 gig Ram 80G HD with 200G External, where i have ableton running off of.

I am able to use the Trigger finger for about a minute or two and then the MIdi signal stop transmitting. .

When I use my old X-session MIdi it works consitently, but obiuosly it is more limited than the TF. I am on the verge of pulling my hair out as well.

there are a lot of factors at play here, the Media Center OS, the Trigger Finger, and your particular Toshiba laptop...
I know that newegg.com sells cheap (ie: $90) legal copies of Windows XP home, if you want to go that route.

One possible workaround:
get a USB MIDI interface and a power brick for your Trigger Finger, and use the MIDI output instead of the USB connection...

Talked to someone at M-Audio today not sure if they totally understood my issue but they recommended this link, I will try when i g tout of the day job:

Also, I contacted the nice people at Audio MIdi, where i bought the bundle recommended getting a power supply for the Midi board. He mentioned something about the power overwheleming the USB and not being strong enough, so it drops the driver (similar to above).

gawd windows is dumb.

why can't they just have one version.

Its not a OS issue its a USB power issue. When i was first plugging in my USB i was using the side ports, (after being on hold on the M-AUDIO phone line for a few minutes) A recording popped on stating to users not to use secondary USB ports as the ones in the back are powered at a higer rate.

I thought about that, went home tried the main usb port in back and it worked with no issues.

So if you are using the back and it still isnt working it means its a powEr issue you just need an a/c power adapter i would think for the TF.

Thanks for the tips! Hmm. I wonder if that will work. Let me try that. I couldn't even get Live to recognize it. So Wish me luck! I'll keep y'all posted.

Ok, i tried a few things but I still can't get it to work...I tried the link above on how to disable the power mgmt function for each of my USB root hubs but that didn't work. Then I tried plugging in the trigger finger to the wall outlet with an adaptor and the USb plug intot he laptop at the same time. That didn't work. Although, i did have it working for like a minute but then it died out...Also, for some reason, when I plugged in the USB plug into the back of my laptop, it wouldn't recognize it. But when I plugged the trigger finger to the side ports I got a popup stating that the USB Trigger Finger was connected. Which is really weird cuz i thought the ports on the back would work better..Weird. So basically, i tried all of the above suggestions to no avail..So I still don't know whether i should try instaling Windows XP Pro or not...I don't want to have to fork over another $200 for a USB midi device and plug it in that way...Geez! I'm gonna call M-audio again...

Try re-installing the driver and then plugging it into the back port.

tried that...It's a windows media center edition problem...Nobody has a fix as of yet...so now I have to play drums on my laptops keyboard. How stupid! Thanls Microsoft, for ruining my life!!!

Dude, just use XP Pro. All the other versions are crap, prolly including Vista. Use Tarekith's tuning tips, and you'll never complain again.

Yeah I decided that's what i am going to do...But I don't want to get rid of Media Center so i have to go out and buy a partition software so I can run a dual boot, BTW Who is Tarekith?

Use Partition Magic. I think Symantec owns it now, but an older version will do just fine too.
