Lower Latency with internal soundcard than with firebox ??!?

Post by chrisedmo » Fri Sep 01, 2006 11:55 pm

Ill keep this short.. basically im in a 3 piece band looking to use Live for looping..
and I bought a Presonus firebox (I'm on a 12" powerbook with 1.25ghz + 1.25GB RAM) and the Latency with Live is awful..
I cannot use it - Everything is badly quantized/warped - and its really off putting.

However when i plug the guitar straight into my powerbook.. its perfect..
feels like real time, and i can actually use this for looping.. even with a few VSTs on ?

Is it just my firebox ? Can you recommend a real ultra low latency audio interface ?
And not just monitoring. My firebox has zero monitoring but its like it takes ages for the sound to get to my disk..
Why is there a big difference ? Should i sell my firebox and get something else..

I am after at LEAST two inputs and good sound quality. up to (96khz).

The box is only as good as its drivers...

I play electronic drums through Live. I currently run my rig at 5.5 ms of latency...pretty darn good..ALMOST imperceptable. I had to buy 3 audio interfaces before I got it right.

Save your self the hassel of buying cheap and getting poor preformance...this one will last you a long time:

RME Fireface 400. Its about 950.00 and worth every penny.

Good luck

Have you tried going into the firebox 'control panel' and setting the latency to a lower setting? The default latency is high...but is easily changed. I have it set to 3 or 4 on my pc laptop (which makes for a latency setting of 6-8ms in Live)...totally acceptable for evrything I'm doing.

I've found the Firebox to be really good with both my pc laptop and my wifes's macbook pro,... the drivers are very solid.

Also worth checking the newish universal firewire driver from CEntrance...it's optimised for the Firebox...

Good luck.

The presonus stuff rocks as far as I`ve experienced
I use a Firepod though, but it kicks butt on my win laptop.
Stable, low latency and good quality sound
