Yeah... Kinda an elitist vibe there.. So I try and stay away.

I know some people signed to major labels and such, that have helped, but I dont wanna bug them. I am really close to getting to where I need to be, but my breaks are lacking. So that is my problem.

I have been told I am close to getting signed, just I suck at drums so they sound wack.

you can't make your own breaks (unless you have a drum kit). You can recycle other peoples though. Try cutting them into their constituent parts adding your own sounds and removing some from the original. You can also reorder/quantize the hits to create new rhythms.

here is a quick attempt - 4 clips (made from one break) mapped to keys a s d and f. Key g controls the gate floor level. press a to start then press the other keys. Not very drum and bassy break but it's one route you can try! :D

First up - let me say I love D n' B. I've NEVER tried to make it, though. Can someone clear something up for me?

Programming a D n' B beat is hard. As well as the beats, though there is usually "a break" as y'all call it running in time with the programmed beat (a la Amen/Apache etc/etc..).

So does the rythym part of a D n' B track consist of the programmed beats and the breaks playing together???

All the music I like is based around the rythym part - Hip-Hop, Breakbeat, D n' B.

I'd love to start producing some D n' B - but that rythym part is makin' my head ache!!!

It aint that hard -

recycle a break
put the hits into your sampler
get the MIDI part, and start playing with it
layer a kick and snare on top
maybe some hats etc

try and keep the groove of the break in there if possible.

once your shoulders and head start moving you know you're onto something!

Recycle a break...

Does that go "in the background" so to speak??? Behind the main Kick/Snare pattern???

there are lots of methods to get a nice dnb beat.

- get lots and lots of breaks from various sources (funk, jazz, metal, etc)
- recycle them, cut them
- then you have to analyze these breaks. some will be strong enough to stand on their own. others will have to be layered with other breaks to make them work. maybe some will only provide a snare or a kick, others can be used full.
- start toying around, layer 2-3 breaks on top of each other. try out different eq settings for each one of them. use the first one for kick and snare, the second one for mid percussions and the third one for hats and rides.

yes in the most cases.

usualy i pick the recycled break first. and then, if the original breaks itself is lacking punch, i choose kicks and snares to layer them.

Because my boy makes breaks for our tunes... And I wanna make my own breaks so I can lose him.

What is a amazing is how people can open thier mouths and not say anything useful.

Try listening to any Source Direct track many times over, that might give ya some ideas. I recommend Black Rose.

the loop clip posted ain't so bad, it's just stiff as hell.
try moving the hits around a bit to get a more organic feel...don't stick to the grid too much within the single clip.

cheers

Yeah thats my issue... My programming sucks when it comes to making breaks...

When I work with my friend he has all his breaks already written so we just start a track. That kinda sucks because I cant see and hear what exactly he did to make the patterns.
