Hey, apologies if this is posted in the wrong section, but I would appreciate some help on this matter
I have today bought an Edirol UM-1ex USB MIDI interface to hook up my MicroKORG synth with Ableton 5. I can successfully use the keyboard to play specified device sounds (operator, impulse etc), but I would like to know how to use the actual sounds/voices of the synth itself to input to Ableton. Any help on this would be much appreciated. Essentially I need to know how to route MIDI to make this work (something I have very little knowledge about).
Cheers,
~Knotty.

Hey Knotty,
In order to trigger sounds from your MicroKORG with Live you will need to do the following:
1. Create a new MIDI track & clip.
2. In the tracks routing section set the MIDI output to you Edirol UM-1ex & select MIDI channel 1 - 16 depending on which channel your MicroKORG is set to receive on.
3. Add some notes to the clip by drawing them in on the piano roll.
4. Hit play on the clip ensuring that the track is in "auto" monitoring mode
5. Ableton should now be triggering the notes to play back from the MicroKorg.
6. If you wish to record audio from the MicroKORG into Ableton you must connect the outputs of the MK to your soundcards input, create an audio track, select the appropriate input and monitoring mode.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Macriada. What you've said is actually what I was able to do primarily.
For instance, if I activate the Moogli device in a midi clip, and arm the clip, I am able to trigger the sounds via the keyboard on the MK. What I am unable to do is to use the synthesiser and vocoder of the MK itself. Is there a particularly setting on the new MIDI clip I need to select in order for Ableton to accept the tone generator of the MK?
Thanks again,
~Knotty.

There's also the MONITOR button above the track, it can be 'in, auto and off'.
With 'in' you can play the synth, with 'auto' the clip plays the synth, off is just off.
The most brute force method is to create a MIDI track and set the inputs to ALL INS and channels to ALL CHANNELS. The I/O listings in the drop down boxes will show midi activity next to them.
As you get the hang of it, move away from using ALL INs to specific channels, as ALL INs can lead to weird results (this controlling that and that when it shouldn't, etc.)

Knotty, are you talking about :
1) Recording midi into Live, which in turn would trigger sounds on the Korg
or:
2) Recording the actual SOUNDS of the Korg into Live?
mbp 2.66, osx 10.6.8, 8GB ram.

one track for sending midi to the device, from a clip or a device, whatever you route to it
another track to receive the audio - set its input to the sound card port where the MK is connected. have audio playing on the MK and watch for activity indicators to follow the signal
I think the overall advice will get you there, any questions?

Hey,
I'm not familiar with your interface, but you should be able to go dual 1/4" audio out of the MicroKORG from the R and L output jacks, into your interface, create an audio track, arm it and then you should see and hear your audio coming in. You may need to activate the "I/O" button in Live to see the channels, and select the correct ones that your in's are coming in on.
Make sure "local" is "on" in MicroKORG midi settings. -Jamie
