Midi notes sound off pitch and key when i 'play' it.

Post by dreamlandscheme » Thu Sep 07, 2006 4:29 pm

Ok so here goes a question for all you Ableton Pros.

Heres the situation: I am rewiring Reason3 into Live 5.
basically I am trying to do a mini live show where i play along with
some of my music. I am sure lots of you are doing somethin similar.
Anyway when i play the lead or the piano part (with my midi controller, Maudio O2) it sounds ungodly and horribly offpitch and i wanna shoot myself. When i press 'play' it sounds perfect.

So what the hell is going on? i generally find all answers while serchin the forums but, i have to post now.

I need some quick help guys thanks so much

yeah ive definitely spent most of today tryin to fix it but what the hell is going on i dont know.
how is that even possible? please help guys. i need someone with a bit of midi knowledge.

also, obviously the midi signal is going through live because reason is rewired, but i cant even explain how ugly it sounds when i play along with the mix with my midi keyboard. Its like somone pressed the detuned button and messed up the keys and everything.

help!

What happens when you try a hardware controller on each seperately without Rewire? Does just playing a vst through a controller in Live give the same results or is it a Rewire only issue?

ah thanks for the reply man. someone willing to help.
good idea. i shouldve thought of that.

so here we go:
i started a new track completely.
and did a simple one line progression with a lead,
and then a piano that plays the same progression in a different key
with varied rythm. and it doesnt sound detuned yet.

then i moved the piano away (this is all simpler samples), and tried playing along with the lead and it sounds terrible. Then i quited everything down (pressed space bar). and just played the piano and it sounds fine. i am perplexed.
can you or someone give it a shot at your programs let me know if you get the same issue. but i really doubt that would be the case.

and just to make everything clearer i did this too:
i played one note rythmically on the piano away from the arrangment while it was still running,
and it sounds ok, THEN when i moved the play section over the lead pad and the beat (meaning the rythmic hit of the piano was playing with the lead and the beat). the piano instantly sounds detuned.

unbelivable
thanks to all who can help. i realy appreciate this kennerb.

Reason is probably the culprit

Watch the meters on the tracks routed from reason. When you play the lead from Reason, do the other meters move at all? It is probably playing more than one instrument.

Suggestions:

1. Route all devices in Reason directly into the hardware interface of reason, in Live select the individual channels to recieve sound.

2. Make sure and disable the midi control icon in Reason's Sequencer or you will be playing that intrument and what ever you are trying to control in Live.

Let me know if that helps..

That's perplexing. It doesn't happen to me at all. Something that I have seen cause similar type issues is if you have you midi set up to send and receive on a device and it sends out signals for some reason. I can't remember what it was with me at the time but it kept sending a midi command that would change the tempo. I had to go back and set the midi to send only on that device. What does your midi set up look like in preferences?

I've had Live play off-pitch when I loaded a friend's .als. I unset and reset the sampling rate and everything went back into pitch. It was weird using a guitar tuner to tune my computer, sure enough, it was flat.

OH AWSOME.
well i had the audio signal routed to a seperate channel for each like you mentioned, but i wasnt controlling the midi from live, instead it was going through live to reason, and like you said i had the midi icon on, in live, SO, i created a separate channel for midis too, and they sound perfect. I love LIVE, reason would suck if i didnt have live.

thanks so much guys i really appreciate it.

if you are interested in some of the music that i hammer out of live heres a link:

this track was made solely in live, with my own operator patches and my friend recorded on saxaphone with the effect called 'space reverb' or something like that. Enjoy. (oh and thats me on the weird vocals haha)

ummm.

nevermind actually.
i just spent a half hour playing and stuff, and it just went to hell for some reason.
when i posted that last reply it sounded decent. but i dont know guys.

its sounds like crap again. it seems to me that after i assigned 'beat repeat' to a pad in the track it went off pitch then, I dont know how thats possible. Basically i assigned controls from my midi controller to the controls for the 'beat repeat' like the filter values and i set the basic 'on' button for beat repeact at C2, which is about a fifth away from the chords that i am actually playing.

weird.

thanks for your help guys.
