don't know, I was considering an MPC1000 as well a few months ago but recently got an Axiom 49 and the pads serve me very well. I have loads of drum samples and thought, why bother dumping those into the MPC, mapping then, when they're already there in the computer. Of course, there is something to be said about the sound of MPC's, there is a difference, but it wasn't enough to tip the scale in it's favor. If I need more pads, I'll consider a trigger-finger.

mpc + live are the core of my setup.

...nice to bash away on the mpc to get away from the screen.

also makes for a compact + versatile live set-up (which i've basically whittled down to macbook + ultralite + mpc + kaoss 2...sometimes adding a microkorg and/or evolver)...really nice after having to lug around + set up tons of crap, and makes for something a bit more interesting than a pure laptop performance.

yeah, in the mpc hit mode, pad9, and f3 to get to the note editor page and adjust the pads to send the corresponding note value for the impulse slots. i'm not sure, but i think impulse starts on c3? someone correct me if i'm wrong.
but, if an mpc replaces anything in live, its impulse. i honestly wouldn't bother unless you've got tons of impulse patches set up already. once you get into making programs in the mpc its dead easy.

mpb c2d, remote sl, mpc1000, korg legacy, zebra 2, phoscyon, devastator

I got my MPC1000 with new OS and Ableton5, so simple and so good.
My basic setup is

MPC for sequencing
and
Ableton for Sound design.

OR vice versa

just bounce down all those vst's to loops
and get to making tracks.
