tell you what SpikeeSpikee wrote:This week I made a realization -- as I was driving in my car running some errands for my business, I'm listening to this album and each song that comes up is a new feeling, joy, sadness, awe... and I'm thinking about how great this album is and how it's got to be one of the greatest ever (IMHO) and it dawned on me -- in my own personal taste, this is the greatest album ever. And it knocked my long time favorite album off of its pedestal.
That album? Sea Change, by Beck. And I'm not even a Beck fan really... but that album is the quintessential work of art to me, it is perfect in every way. You can really feel the emotion in the songs, and you can appreciate the craftsmanship that went into the composition and the production.
So, what are your favorite albums of all time? Here's the rules -- up to 5 so the list doesn't get too dense, no "OHMIGOD that album sux!" or junk like that, let's just see what the Ableton community would want in their backpack if they were marooned on an island.
My other four:
Quique -- Seefeel
Second Toughest In The Infants -- Underworld
Dark Side Of The Moon -- Pink Floyd
Lost Souls -- Doves
I'm infintely grateful to you for posting this
I'm pretty close to agreeing with you about Sea change
this is the best album i've heard in years
I meant to add:
it's almost like he's taken all the things people have learned about music production since computers have come along - he used the samplers and stuff before and now he's turned around and done it with traditional instruments - including analog synths - this album is so organic, but very cleverly produced that it's a 21st century album, but it's also completely timeless

5 best
Right now the list would look something like this - tomorrow it'd be different!
Yabby U: Jesus Dread
Pole: 2
Mark Hollis: Mark Hollis
Massive Attack: Mezzanine
Black Uhuru: Black sounds of freedom

Dude that's completely awesome! I'm really glad I said something, as there's so much music out there that it's really easy to miss something. I don't know what it is about this album, it doesn't really break any new boundaries or anything but in simplistic terms its just perfectly written, perfectly produced and every song has a way of conjuring a strong emotion.forge wrote:tell you what SpikeeSpikee wrote:This week I made a realization -- as I was driving in my car running some errands for my business, I'm listening to this album and each song that comes up is a new feeling, joy, sadness, awe... and I'm thinking about how great this album is and how it's got to be one of the greatest ever (IMHO) and it dawned on me -- in my own personal taste, this is the greatest album ever. Re: The Best Album Ever.
yeah - well like I started saying above to add - it felt like as I was listening to it as if he had taken onboard all the extra technical knowledge using electronic music gear had given him over the years and applied it to songwriting - if you listen in headphones it does feel like everything is just perfectly placed, but with alot of electronic music the sounds might be perfectly placed, but that's all it has - but it's like beck in that album now has the maturity to just turn that knowledge to writing good songs - if that makes any senseSpikee wrote:Dude that's completely awesome! I'm finding after so many years of using this technology - it's almost like the club oriented stuff is the practice room - where you learn how to produce mix sounds together for maximum impact, but ultimately it will never have the same impact as a good song because there is that real element of the writers personality in there when they sing and write lyrics
it seems to happen to alot of the great electronic musos too - where they eventually come round to doing songs and less of the technicality for it's own sake
Maybe the music scene in 2006+ is about the musicians maturing and taking all the best things from the past and having the means and know how to make it really extra ordinary and transcendental - and this is why in many ways dance music is running out of steam - or maybe it just is for me
Some 5 random favorites in no particular order:
Oval: Ovalprocess
La Buena Vida: Soidemersol
Autechre: LP5
Basic Channel: Compiled
Ride: Going blank again
And because we're at the Abe's forum let me recommend some Monolake stuff which is also definitely among my favorites of all time: Gravity, Interstate and Hong Kong.
