Creating sets from "thin air"

Post by rasputin » Mon Sep 11, 2006 10:53 pm

I was intrigued by recent discussions about creating sets that were "random"; that is, starting with a few simple samples and loops and using Follow Actions to let the piece run forever and not really repeating. Robert Henke posted some excellent examples of the output of this, although I think since he did it in Live 6 he couldn't post the sets.

Meanwhile, I also learned that using the "Crackle" feature in the Vinyl Distortion processor, and running that through a combination of Reverbs, Filters, Resonators and other audio processors, you could create a much wider palette of sounds than you'd expect.

So basically starting with nothing except your Live application you can actually create a credible track. I started by creating several tracks with different combinations of audio processing to use as a kick drum, snare, hi hat and bass. I resampled these so I had clips to work with which I dumped into Simplers. Then I added a couple other things for variety.

Then you simply use MIDI clips to drive the Simplers and lo and behold you're on your way.

I have put up on an ftp site my current experiment along these lines. Feel free to do anything you want to it.

ftp address = 205.178.132.163
account name = live%0002b5
password = live5.2

The zip file is called Self-generating_set.zip = 2.35 MB

(I have converted all the audio in the Sounds folder to mp3 format)

To just hear a 1:30 sample of this project, you can get
Self-generating set Rendered.mp3 = 1.6 MB

Unfortunately I can't try this myself from where I'm posting this, but I did have a typo in the login name: left out one zero in the account name

Try these:

ftp address = 205.178.132.163
account name = live%00002b5
password = live5.2

This should put you into the directory with the files for the project.

Would really enjoy hearing peoples' take on this...
