max-ing midi controllers

Post by debris » Thu Sep 14, 2006 1:45 pm

(edited sept.16)
sorry if this has been covered... I've looked but cannot find the answers to;

- I want to trigger tracks (edit..I mean 'Scenes" ) with my Micro controller, without having my other keyboards triggering on the same notes... is it possible to isolate the midi channel for firing tracks ?

- I want to fire tracks (edit.. "Scenes") without firing all the clips on the tracks (enabling me to have more 'bed taks' available by using, for instance channels 1 - 8 for one series of beds, and 9 -16 for a second series... ) any cool ideas on this? using the crossfader is one obvious option, but the unwanted tracks are still playing and eating CPU...

- there's not enough CC #s for all the midi controlling I want to do... is there a way around this?

my setup... Roland A-37 73 key controller(just for playing); Korg micro(just for the controllers; Novation Remote49 (for keys and controllers);;KorgKarma; UC33; various outboard sound sources; running Live5 on iMac and Macbook

to rephrase... I'm mainly interested in Live as a means of enhancing live performance with pre-sequenced loops and tracks, NOT as a DJ-ing tool... I'm trying to maximize flexibility by getting as many tunes on one Set as possible, so I can spontaneously structure live sets.... any thoughts on utilizing real-time controllers would be MUCH appreciated... come to Tokyo and I'll buy the beer!!

thanks to all.... .db. ...and I hope I've managed to explain myself... :?

not sure what you are asking but...

in the midi drop down for every track in your set you should be able to choose any midi input devices connected to your system, then under that choose what channel.

just make sure your micro is sending on a different channel than the A-37. then choose the appropriate channels on whichever tracks in live.

thanks for the reply... and sorry for the confusion... Wrong term! ...I meant to be talking about firing Scenes... EVERY midi channel seems to fire Scenes, with no way to assign a specific track... I've looked for a Global Setting for midi, hoping to specify a midi channel, but can't find anything... THAT'S what I'm talking about...apologies for wasting your time... it was late night when I posted ... :? so substitute 'Scene' for 'Track' and hopefully my post makes sense...

-I need a specific midi channel for firing scenes

- I need to fire a scene without firing all the clips ... i.e. - imagine a vertical line cutting the whole screen in half, so I can fire the left side beds, or the right side beds... there are obvious solutions, but all involve panning or crossfading, so the tracks are still drawing on the CPU... I mean, I'll live with it if I have to, but it would make Live a helluva lot more useful to me if I had more CPU... I'm getting the dreaded drop-out thing happening on occasion as it is...

thanks for your time!

i think (cause i'm not sure !) you can't fire the scenes without firing all the clips in it . May you create a scene specially to fire samples one by one yhat you atribu with your computer keys for exemple (it's what i often do).
Or you can desactive some clips before fire the scene and reactivat them when you play and fire them...
About your midi controllers i think you have to isolate each button or fader on a different "control assigne" between 1 and 128 to make them controlling just one item.
Anyway i'm french so i hope my english was understandable  !
good luck !

electro-square... bonjour and merci! je suis Canadian mais mon francais terrible... excuse moi, eh?

your ideas I understand... but I think you need to use the mouse to active clips...?? ... and I'm not using the mouse for live at all...

I can just use the computer keys for firing scenes, which I guess I'll have to live with (unless anyone else has some ideas...anyone...??? :) ...I'd just rather be able to use the little Micro keyboard, but that's OK...

...and I would like to at least double the number of CC's available... 128 is not enough!

anyway, thanks for the reply... salut... .db.

yes debris you're right : need the mouse to desactivate clips
I use a pro 88 of M-Audio and i can fire the scene i want with it (button or keys)
anyway it's amazing you need more 128 CC !
What kind of music do you play ? do you have a website to listen to some of your tracks ? Sorry i'm curious ! ;)
check my website if you want www.electro-square.com
see you

electro... no website yet, but will let you know when :) ...
I have a few different soft-effects (Camel audio stuff, Elastic stuff, Spectrasonics stuff etc.) and I need a lot of controllers live performance... of course I can get by with what's there.... but....

I'm a composer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/singer/ short-order chef...:).... and I write/play many styles... the Live-type stuff is under the moniker Max Fractall and is what I call organic-android-groove (whatever the f##k that means)
...basically R+B with funny noises and lots of vocals! I've got 3 Japanese female singer/dancers rehearsing with me now and hope to start working that act around Tokyo in November... I'm just off to bed.... will check yer stuff later, eh? (that's a little Can-eh?-jun fer ya, eh?) :)
