It's true that you can do better than Sony in terms of price/performance. But then again you made it clear in your first post that you were weighing Vaio against Mac and styling was of some importance. I've been very happy with my Vaio SZ-140. Personally, I think it looks cooler than a Mac, it's fast as hell (2GHz Core Duo), and I didn't have any major problems with the preconfigured OS/software as reported. If you've already got a bunch of licensed PC software, sticking with a Windows laptop has its benefits for sure.

At ~$1800 the SZ's not the cheapest way to get the job done. Then again, it's got a decent video accelerator on board, so if you play games at all, there's some added value there.

Admittedly, when I had a Mac (Jaguar) I didn't keep it long enough to get into all that with it. But it' so simple in XP to do things like say, control how quickly a sub-menu pops open, or disable all the silly graphics shit like swooshing wiindows when they close. Also the limited right-click was frustrating, but I understand that's improved since then.

I don't know, it just seems like with Windows I can do a lot to make it exactly how I want, wheras with OSX it's either not available or else it takes more work (maybe having to write a script compared to simply changing a numerical value) to tweak and customize.

And whoever thinks XP is nothing but problems is just wrong. I've been making a lot of music on my Vaio for almost three years now, and have had no problems in that regard. Everything works great, hardware and software. It's ridiculous that people actually believe that! Yeah, Windoze ME was a piece of shite (and the reason I got a Mac), but XP is great for music, period.

On top of that, comparing the Powerbook's specs to my Vaio's two and a half years ago was laughable. Apple really had a rough time with the "can't make a G5 laptop" debacle. Thankfully it's all worked out, and they are back to being competitive spec-wise (though I still think they're way overpriced comparitively). The price difference was especially ridiculous back then, with Powerbooks being more expensive yet with way outdated specs.

I like Macs, I really do. The new cross-platform capabilities has opened up the possibility of my next notebook being a Mac. But why they don't price themselves more competitively is beyond me. If they would price themselves to compete more directly with Windows, they would probably find themselves with a lot more converts.

As I wrote in another post, $3,250 for a new 15" Macbook Pro with 2gigs of RAM is simply too expensive compared to a similar XP machine (at least for me).

They might sell more computers.... but probably at closer to a loss. They simply don't have the economies of scale to compete with PC companies on price. They are a niche company, which has to charge premium prices to recover higher costs through lower unit sales.

True and true.

IMO the Windows-bashing Mac users base most of their arguments on the state of affairs 5-10 years ago. Ironically what's making the Mac truly viable now is that it's essentially turning into a PC - it's got an Intel chip in it and it will run the extensive library of Windows apps. The mac guys all stand up and say, "I told you my mac was better - see, it'll do the same things your PC's been doing for the last 5 years."

And in the end there's no use getting our panties in a bunch either way. They were just computers in the first place, and within a year or two they'll be the same computers. If you dug your machines up to now, good on ya, as they say.

Now, I'm not a pro when it comes to computers. My knowledge is basic, at best

BUT... I have both: a VAIO and a MacBook Pro, so i can tell you from firsthand experience what I've noticed

Firstly, both are very appealing in terms of looks. Sleek, streamlined, pleasant to look at.

In terms of performance:

the VAIO can be painfully sluggish at times, and also gets my software to get jumps and stutters every once in a while (background processes, as mentioned by others, i suppose? wish i knew which ones i could deactivate without putting my PC at risk... might help a bit)

anyways, on the other hand, the MBP runs smooth as silk. Working with music on it is just a pleasure. Stable as can be. And it handles my software effortlessly.

So in conclusion, I love both my laptops. I do. But I have to admit the mbp kicks the vaio's ass easily. Although some of this can be attributed to the fact that the vaio is older and has inferior specs.

Still, because of stability issues and so forth, i would say get a mac. Not much more expensive than any other pc notebooks and definitely worth the price

How old is your Vaio?

Obviously, if it is not a Core Duo it will lack the performance of the MBP.
