Working from an external HD (authorization?)

I'm looking into setting up an external HD as my Live working drive. I'd like to install a clean OS X, remove all the other apps and basically just use it to run Live. My question is this: Doesn't Ableton's registration use a computer hardware ID to create a response code? If this is the case and I plugged my external drive into different Mac hardware would it work? I'm not too clear as to what the authorization is using to register itself. I know that when installing on a new machine it looks at hardware... but if a drive is moved does it look again?

well i added a external hd to my existing set up and it happily goes between my desk and laptop and live doesnt bat an eyelid.

Is your external drive a boot drive with OS, Live app & Data?
