Those 24" imacs are teasing me...

Post by hell below (not really) » Sun Sep 17, 2006 12:25 am

Hi there, i'am a pc user...
And I'am about to go the core 2 duo road.
I've a 1820M emu soundcard and I'am happy with it.
But... Its only PC! (and pci anyway) So i'll go and buy a core 2 duo desktop pc, lets say a duo 2.4Ghz...
But those 24" imacs are so waaaaaaaw..!
Looking fantastic, a lot of horsepower and not that expensive.
The price of a decent pc with a decent tft, lets say euh... a 24"! costs about 2000 Euro. So in this case the imac is as cheap as a pc!! so i'll go for that imac! I'am considering it.
A 2.33 Ghz core 2 duo. with a 500GB hard disk + an external HD and 2Gigs of Ram. Thats about 2700 Euro. Not exactly cheap but a nice set!
I'am thinkin to use windows xp for music and the osx for video as i'am professionally involved in tv productions (camera and editing). So those two (audio & video) are nicely separated and don't interfere with each other... 8) Or maybe osx all the way..? The audio EMU interface is a no go.
But that aside, are there any pitfalls? Any considerations or thoughts?

Thanks guys.

I just went to the Apple store today to have look at the Imacs. I want I want!!!!!!!!! You can't go wrong with any of the Intel Macs, especially the Imacs with their price vs. spec ratio. If you do get a Mac, get yourself a Metric Halo sound card or RME. If its too expensive then I'd just save up and use the onboard soundcard in the meantime. The soundcard that comes with Macs is really not bad at all.

If $$$'s are important (and looking at your post I'm not sure that is the case) the firebox is fantastic. The RME stuff is a tad overated in my opinion and the Metric Halo is very nice - depends what your doing.
I'm about to grab one of the new Imacs and as I pretty much only use softsynths and the like the firebox was a great fit.
There's a guy I know who has reems of info about the problem with RME's drivers. He also recommended the Metric Halo, which I considered, but seeing as i dont do any live recording I thought it was overkill. The pre-amps in the Halo are amazing. It just depends on what your doing I guess.

Dude my 24" imac arrived on friday night, it is nothing short of amazing! I havent had time to even put Live on there yet (need to beg them for another liscence) but just loaded up garageband to see what performance was like, and compared to the power of my g4 powerbook it is such a massive increase in music making power. I was thinking abount going back to pc as i was disappointed with the G4's performance in live but now I am very sure I made the right choice with the imace, it is an absolute pleasure to use.

How much or does it cost to flip your programs to UB if you're on PC?
